The Family
Before we were officially “The Family” with kids, we took a Carribaen Cruise that stopped in Dominica.
Dominica
Dominica, often called the “Nature Island” of the Caribbean, is a lush, mountainous paradise known for its unspoiled rainforests, dramatic waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes. Unlike many of its neighboring islands, Dominica boasts black sand beaches, boiling lakes, and natural hot springs rather than sprawling resorts. It’s a haven for eco-tourists and adventure seekers, offering world-class diving, hiking through dense jungles, and encounters with vibrant wildlife. With its mix of indigenous Kalinago heritage, Creole culture, and French and British colonial history, Dominica offers a rich and authentic Caribbean experience.
During our cruise through the Caribbean, we made a stop in Dominica. Instead of wandering the port, we booked a local tour that took us deep into the island’s lush, green interior. As we drove through winding roads and passed tiny villages, I was struck by how untouched and wild Dominica felt. The highlight of the day was a stop at one of the island’s many waterfalls. The short hike through the rainforest made the swim even more rewarding. The water was cool and refreshing, cascading into a natural pool surrounded by towering trees and tropical plants. It felt like we had stumbled into our own private jungle oasis.
