Visitors will find vibrant downtowns filled with restaurants, breweries, and arts districts, as well as world-class museums, live sports, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. From catching a Carolina Hurricanes game in Raleigh, to walking Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, to experiencing Durham’s thriving food scene, the Triangle offers something for every traveler.

Whether you’re here for culture, college spirit, or just to soak in the laid-back North Carolina lifestyle, the Triangle is a region that leaves a lasting impression.

The Same

While the Family only passed through North Carolina’s Research Triangle region during a road trip, spending a quick overnight in Raleigh, the DINKs have a much deeper connection.

After living in North Carolina for over 20 years, we’ve explored the Triangle extensively, both for work and leisure. From buzzing business hubs to local food scenes, charming neighborhoods, and cultural landmarks, we (the DINKs) have come to know this dynamic region well.

Here’s a look at how both experiences offer different perspectives on one of the South’s fastest-growing and most vibrant areas.

Raleigh

Raleigh, the vibrant capital of North Carolina, is a city where history, innovation, and Southern hospitality come together. Founded in 1792 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh, it’s one of the few U.S. cities designed specifically to serve as a state capital. Today, Raleigh is at the heart of the Research Triangle, alongside Durham and Chapel Hill, celebrated for its universities, tech companies, and thriving culture.

Visitors can walk through historic landmarks like the North Carolina State Capitol, discover world-class museums, catch a show in the performing arts district, or explore scenic parks, lakes, and greenways. Downtown Raleigh buzzes with energy, offering everything from local favorites like Tobacco Road and Jimmy V’s Osteria + Bar to a booming craft beer scene.

  • EAT: Shrimp and Grits from Tobacco Road Sports Café or Jimmy V’s or Oysters at 42nd Street Oyster Bar (All in Downtown Raleigh)
  • DRINK: Raleigh Brewing Company (West Raleigh), Lonerider Brewing Company (West Raleigh) or Big Boss Brewing Company (Midtown / Five Points area)
  • STAY: Raleigh Marriott City Center – Walking distance to a ton of great restaurants, (and my work office.)

Catch a Carolina Hurricanes Game at Lenovo Center

Raleigh’s centerpiece arena, the newly named Lenovo Center (formerly PNC Arena), is home to the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and NC State basketball.

Catching a Carolina Hurricanes game at Lenovo Center is always a thrill. The energy in the arena is contagious, from the moment the Canes hit the ice to the roar of the crowd after a goal. I love how the fans bring their own traditions and chants, making every game feel like a community celebration. Whether it’s the sound of the storm warning siren or the post-game “Storm Surge” celebrations, there’s nothing quite like experiencing hockey in Raleigh.

The Dinks

We’ve spent a lot of time exploring North Carolina’s Research Triangle, and it’s become one of our favorite regions in the state. Morrisville, North Carolina, is a diverse, tech-driven town located near Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Research Triangle Park. Popular with professionals in the Triangle’s booming tech industry, it still offers a small-town feel with parks, greenways, and the Morrisville History Center. The town’s global dining scene reflects its multicultural community, while Church Street Park draws crowds with international cricket tournaments, an experience rarely found elsewhere in the South.

I’ve only actually stayed in Morrisville for work or when flying out of the airport. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to branch out beyond the typical business park with lots of hotels and chain restaurants or ordering delivery from restaurants in Raleigh.

  • Eat: Try authentic Indian cuisine at Saffron Indian Cuisine
  • Drink: and grab a pint at Gizmo Brew Works Taproom.
  • STAY: We used our Hyatt points from the Chase Sapphire Reserve to book Hyatt Place Raleigh-Durham Airport, just six minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, perfect for our early morning flight.

From cheering on your favorite team in Chapel Hill or Durham, to tasting global flavors in Morrisville, to exploring greenways and parks in Cary or Raleigh, every corner of the Triangle offers a unique experience.
