Two Takes on Lake George, NY: Amusement Parks & Adirondack Peace

Nestled in the southern Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, Lake George has long been known as the “Queen of American Lakes.” With its shimmering crystal-clear waters, scenic mountain backdrops, and charming village atmosphere, it has drawn generations of travelers for summer getaways, family vacations, and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re relaxing on its pristine beaches, boating through The Narrows, or hiking to breathtaking viewpoints, Lake George offers something for everyone. From historical sites and thrilling water sports to serene nature trails and vibrant local attractions, it’s easy to see why this beloved destination continues to captivate visitors year after year.

The Same

Growing up just 45 minutes from Lake George, we spent countless summer days along its shores. From childhood through our teen years, our experiences were nearly identical—swimming at Million Dollar Beach, walking the village strip with ice cream in hand, and watching the Thursday night fireworks over the lake.

Cruise Aboard the Mini Ha-Ha

One of the most iconic Lake George experiences is a scenic cruise aboard the Mini Ha-Ha, a paddlewheel steamboat that brings 19th-century nostalgia to modern-day sightseeing. This replica steamboat is operated by the Lake George Steamboat Company and offers both daytime and sunset cruises through The Narrows, a picturesque section of the lake scattered with wooded islands and rocky outcrops. Passengers can relax on the open deck as they enjoy panoramic views of the lake and surrounding Adirondacks, or choose a dinner cruise for a romantic evening with music and dining under the stars. Whether you’re on a family outing or a couple’s retreat, cruising the lake on the Mini Ha-Ha is a timeless way to take in the natural beauty of the region.

Parasailing and Water Sports on the Lake

If you’re craving a little adrenaline, Lake George has you covered with a full slate of water-based activities. Parasailing is a popular choice for thrill-seekers, offering unforgettable bird’s-eye views of the lake and surrounding mountains from hundreds of feet in the air. It’s a smooth and surprisingly peaceful experience, making it accessible even for first-timers. For those who prefer staying closer to the surface, the lake offers countless opportunities to rent jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and pontoon boats. Spend a sunny afternoon exploring hidden coves or racing across the waves. With several marinas and outfitters around the lake, it’s easy to find equipment and lessons tailored to your experience level.

Hiking Prospect Mountain and Tongue Mountain

Lake George is also a hiker’s paradise, with trails that offer both challenge and reward. Prospect Mountain is one of the most accessible and popular hikes in the area, rising 2,030 feet above sea level. The trail to the summit follows the path of a former incline railway and is about 3 miles roundtrip. Once at the top, hikers are treated to sweeping views of the lake and surrounding Adirondack peaks. For a more rugged and remote adventure, head to the Tongue Mountain Range. This trail system winds along the shoreline, offering multiple routes that vary in difficulty and length. The rewards are worth the effort: dramatic cliffs, secluded lookouts, and sightings of local wildlife like deer and bald eagles. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just out for a morning walk, Lake George’s trails deliver unforgettable scenery.

Relax on Million Dollar Beach and Park Beaches

For those who prefer to unwind by the water, Million Dollar Beach is the perfect place to spend a summer day. This large state-operated beach features soft sand, designated swimming areas, lifeguards, and plenty of room for picnicking and sunbathing. The beach is free to use and offers amenities like changing rooms and restrooms. Families love the calm, shallow waters and ample space to spread out. Nearby, other public beaches like Shepard Park Beach and Usher Park provide smaller, quieter alternatives for those looking to avoid the crowds. Whether you’re building sandcastles with the kids or enjoying a peaceful lakeside nap, the beaches of Lake George invite you to slow down and soak up the sunshine.

Explore Fort William Henry and Fort Ticonderoga

History buffs will find plenty to explore around Lake George, starting with Fort William Henry. Located at the southern end of the lake, this reconstructed 18th-century British fort offers immersive living-history experiences, musket demonstrations, and guided tours. It’s a great spot for families and anyone interested in learning about the French and Indian War and colonial life in the region. Just a short drive away, Fort Ticonderoga sits at the northern end of the lake and played a significant role in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. This sprawling fort complex features costumed interpreters, musket firings, historical gardens, and boat tours across Lake Champlain. Visiting both forts offers a deeper understanding of the strategic importance of Lake George throughout American history.

Explore the Village of Lake George

No visit to the area is complete without spending time in the bustling village of Lake George. This walkable downtown area is packed with shops, cafes, arcades, and family-friendly amusements. You’ll find everything from quirky souvenir stores and local art galleries to old-fashioned ice cream parlors and waterfront restaurants. Mini-golf courses, amusement parks, and go-kart tracks line the main drag, making it an ideal spot for families with kids. For nightlife, the village comes alive with live music, lakeside bars, and seasonal festivals. Strolling the lakefront walkway at sunset or catching a weekend fireworks show over the water is the perfect way to cap off a day in Lake George.

The Great Escape – Amusement Park

Just outside the village of Lake George, The Great Escape & Hurricane Harbor has been a summer staple for generations of families in Upstate New York. Originally opened as Storytown USA in the 1950s, the park has grown into a full-fledged Six Flags amusement and water park with roller coasters, water slides, live entertainment, and kid-friendly rides. But for many of us who grew up nearby, it’s more than just a theme park, it’s a place packed with memories.

As a kid, The Great Escape was the ultimate summer outing. I still remember piling into the car with my siblings, sunscreen already on, hyped up for a day of roller coasters,, and running through the splash pad. Rides like the Comet, the Raging River, and the Sky Ride were all rites of passage. It was big enough to feel like an adventure, but close enough to home that it was part of our regular summer rhythm.

The Family still live in the area with kids of their own, bringing them to The Great Escape feels both nostalgic and exciting. I get to see the park through their eyes as they discover all the same thrills I loved, plus a few new ones. From the kid zones to the water park, it’s a place we can return to again and again for easy, guaranteed fun. And nothing beats ending the day with a sleepy car ride home, just like we used to.

Lake George Battlefield Park

Lake George Battlefield Park is where the forested southern inlet of the lake comes alive with living history. Originally the site of Fort George, it witnessed the pivotal Battle of Lake George in 1755, a major British victory in the French & Indian Warand later played key roles in the Revolutionary War, including hosting the Continental Army’s largest smallpox hospital in 1776.

Today, it’s a sprawling 118-acre historic district punctuated with earthen trenches, archaeological remnants, interpretive trails, monuments to figures like Father Isaac Jogues and King Hendrick, and the preserved bastion of Fort George. Walking its grassy lanes, you can’t help but reflect that beneath your feet were soldier encampments, field hospitals, and epic clashes that shaped early America.

In recent years, the park has been revitalized, not only through ongoing digs and geophysical surveys to unearth colonial-era artifacts, but also through monument restoration efforts. Just this June 2025, restored statues of the Mohawk Warrior, Saint Isaac Jogues, and a memorial to the 1755 battle were unveiled, sparking renewed interest in preserving the park’s rich narrative
