The DINKs
We moved to the South Carolina shore about 20 mins south of Myrtle Beach. Prior to that, we did not spend a ton of time there. But since then we have really embraced the area. We are partial to Surfside Beach or Garden City Beach. Less crowded and more family oriented. It’s a great place to relax and escape the bustle of Myrtle beach. Both are close proximity to Murrells Inlet: The “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” offering fresh seafood restaurants and boat tours.
Surfside Beach
Nicknamed “The Family Beach”: Offers a quieter and more laid-back vibe compared to Myrtle Beach. Perfect for those seeking a more peaceful escape. Limited high-rise hotels: You’ll find more vacation rentals and smaller beachfront properties. It does have a shorter beachfront when compared to Garden City Beach which is another one we love.
- River City Cafe – A popular choice for burgers, seafood, and hearty American fare, with a laid-back vibe and outdoor seating options. Their burgers are really good. It’s located right on the beach so it’s a perfect place to grab lunch when spending the day on the beach.
- The Golden Egg – A local favorite for breakfast and brunch, featuring a range of hearty options such as omelets, pancakes, and fresh coffee. Prices have gone up recently but it’s still a decent value compared to many other places. Portion sizes are good and the food is amazing. We recommend calling ahead to get on their wait list as there is often a decently long wait.
- Hamburger Joe’s: While the original is in North Myrtle (see below,) now that we live near Surfside this is the one we go to. Their old style simple cheeseburgers and cheap Natty light makes for an inexpensive meal.
- Bubba’s Fish Shack: Bubba’s Fish Shack is a casual, family-friendly spot known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious seafood. The menu features a variety of seafood options, including fried shrimp, fish tacos, and hush puppies, all served in generous portions and affordable prices.
Free Hula and Fire Show: One of our favorite activities is the Free Hula and Fire Show on Monday evenings near the Surfside beach pier! Experience the vibrant culture and mesmerizing performances featuring talented hula dancers and skilled fire performers. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this event promises an unforgettable evening of entertainment by the beach. Bring your friends, family, and a beach chair, and enjoy the rhythmic music, graceful hula moves, and thrilling fire acts under the stars.

Garden City
- Garden City Beach: Still family-friendly, we find it even more relaxed and laid back than even Surfside Beach. It also A longer beachfront which means it offers more options for beachfront rentals or hotels. It also has more marsh area which is great for fishing, crabbing, and enjoying the natural beauty.

The Family
Oceanfront Resort on The Grand Strand
When my family and I choose a hotel, we prioritize amenities that cater to both relaxation for the adults and entertainment for the kids. For us, having a balcony overlooking the ocean is essential. It provides a peaceful spot where we can unwind when the kids go to bed. We also love hotels with a lazy river. It’s a fantastic feature that allows the kids to float along the gentle current, while my spouse and I can relax on inner tubes and soak up the sun. We look for a hotel with a lazy river that winds through lush landscaping for added ambiance. In addition to a lazy river, we appreciate hotels that offer a variety of pools and water features to keep the kids entertained. Splash pads, water slides, and children’s pools with interactive play areas are always a hit with our little ones.
Summary
In conclusion, while both the DINKs and the Family enjoyed Myrtle Beach’s rich offerings—from Murrells Inlet to indulging in local seafood—the DINKs’ deeper exploration stands out. As residents of Surfside Beach, they have gained insider knowledge of the area, venturing beyond the usual tourist spots to explore Surfside Beach, Garden City, local golf courses, Broadway at the Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Georgetown. Their familiarity with the region adds a unique, personalized layer to their experiences, showing that Myrtle Beach has something for everyone, whether you’re a visitor or a local.
