The Same

While neither the Dinks or the Family have spent a lot of time in Kansas City there was some overlap in their experiences.

The Kansas City War Memorial

Perched atop a hill in Penn Valley Park, the memorial offers not only a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces but also breathtaking views of the cityscape below. As visitors ascend the steps leading to the memorial, they are greeted by the imposing sight of the Liberty Memorial, a towering monument that serves as the focal point of the memorial complex. Kansas City Public Library Community Bookshelf

It’s not a traditional library building, but rather a giant public art installation featuring a facade resembling a bookshelf. he Community Bookshelf is a striking feature of Kansas City’s downtown. It’s actually the side of a parking garage that’s been transformed into a massive bookshelf! The shelves are made of signboard mylar and showcase the spines of 22 giant books, representing 42 recommended titles chosen by the community.

Local Cuisine

And of course, there was overlap when it came to food.

Kansas City is renowned as the barbecue capital of the world, and no visit to the city would be complete without indulging in its mouthwatering barbecue delights. Sample tender, slow-smoked ribs, brisket, and burnt ends at iconic barbecue joints like Arthur Bryant’s, Gates BBQ, and Joe’s Kansas City BBQ.

Immerse yourself in the smoky aroma and lively atmosphere of Kansas City’s barbecue scene, where pitmasters proudly carry on the city’s culinary traditions. The DINKS tried Ribs from Arthur Bryants and after having ribs in Memphis and St. Louis, they found the ones from Arthur Bryant was actually a bit disappointing. They enjoyed the spicy sauce d though. From Joe’s they got the Zman. They found the sandwich itself good but the brisket was a little dry.

The DINKs

The Wyandotte County Lake Loop Trail

The Wyandotte County Lake Loop Trail is a 9.7-mile loop trail around Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kansas. It’s a great option for a scenic bike ride or hike. The trail is rated as moderately challenging, with some hilly and rocky terrain. However, it offers beautiful views of the lake and surrounding countryside. The trail is shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders so when we reached muddy areas we turned around and took side trails.

Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals)

Cheer on the Kansas City Royals baseball team at this iconic stadium. We were in town during baseball season so of course we had to go watch a game. What’s neat is it shares a parking lot with Arrowhead Stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play. So while it was off season for them we at least were able to see the stadium.

The Family

We stopped in Kansas City on a road trip out west so our time in the city was limited. As always we took advantage of our national park system.

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, located in the heart of the Flint Hills region of Kansas, offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience one of North America’s most endangered ecosystems. In addition to hiking, visitors can embark on scenic drives along the preserve’s gravel roads, which traverse rolling hills and offer sweeping vistas of the prairie stretching to the horizon.
