The Same

While the Family sought a relaxing beach vacation on the island of Mallorca, the Dinks opted for a mix of exploration in Palma with some beach time as well.

The Beach

The Beach in Palma Mallorca is beautiful and we both made sure we took advantage of that. One of Mallorca’s most renowned beaches is Playa de Palma, located near the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca. Stretching for several kilometers along the coast, Playa de Palma is a lively beach destination known for its soft sand, clear waters, and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports and beachfront amenities, as well as a bustling promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and bars.

  • ⚠️There are a topless woman on the beach, but we didn’t see that many and the kids didn’t notice them at all.
Local Cuisine

Mallorca, an island nestled in the Mediterranean, boasts a rich culinary heritage that blends local ingredients with influences from Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines. Even though the Dinks had limited time and the Family spent most of their time at an all-inclusive resort, both tried to indulge in local cuisine.

  • Ensaimada: Perhaps the most famous pastry in Mallorca, ensaimada is a coiled, flaky pastry dusted with powdered sugar. It can be enjoyed plain or filled with cream, pumpkin, or apricot.
  • Sobrassada: A soft, spreadable sausage made from ground pork, paprika, and spices. Sobrassada is often served on bread or used as a topping for dishes.
  • Pa amb Oli: A simple yet delicious dish of rustic bread drizzled with olive oil and topped with tomatoes, garlic, and sometimes cured meats or cheeses. It’s a staple for many Mallorcans.
  • Arroz Brut: A hearty rice dish cooked with various meats such as pork, chicken, and sobrassada, flavored with saffron and other spices. It’s similar to paella but with a richer, earthier flavor.
  • Frito Mallorquín: A traditional fried dish typically made with lamb or pork offal (such as liver and kidneys), potatoes, red peppers, and garlic, seasoned with local herbs.
  • Coca Mallorquina: A savory pastry similar to pizza dough topped with vegetables, meats, or seafood. It can be found in various forms across the island, reflecting local tastes and seasonal ingredients.

The DINKs

Palma was a stop for us on the Mediterranean cruise so we only had a single day. We purposely searched each stop to see if the port was possible to do on our own with out paying the hefty price of an excursion.

Hop On, Hop Off Bus

There is a Hop-on-Off bus stop right at the cruise port so it was the easiest and inexpensive way for us to get around the city. There is even a stop a short distance from the beach.

  • Palma Cathedral (La Seu): This magnificent Gothic cathedral is one of Palma’s most iconic landmarks. Its stunning architecture, rose window, and interior artwork make it a must-visit.
  • Bellver Castle: A unique circular castle overlooking the city, Bellver Castle offers panoramic views of Palma and houses the City History Museum.
  • Royal Palace of La Almudaina: This historic palace, adjacent to the cathedral, served as a royal residence and is now open to the public. It provides insights into Mallorca’s history.
  • Palma’s Old Town: Explore the narrow streets and charming squares of Palma’s historic center, known as Casco Antiguo. Highlights include Plaça Mayor and Plaça d’Espanya.
  • Paseo Marítimo: This scenic waterfront promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering views of the Mediterranean Sea, luxury yachts, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Platja de Can Pere Antoni is a beautiful urban beach located in the heart of Palma de Mallorca. Situated just a short distance from the city center, this beach offers locals and visitors alike a convenient escape to sun, sand, and sea without having to travel far from the urban hustle and bustle. The beach is well-equipped with amenities, including sun loungers, umbrellas, and showers, ensuring a comfortable experience for visitors. One of the highlights of Platja de Can Pere Antoni is its stunning views of Palma’s iconic landmarks, including the majestic Palma Cathedral and the historic Bellver Castle, which rise up against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. Visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas of these architectural marvels while basking in the sun or taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade.
Happy Hour

In Palma de Mallorca, happy hour is more than just a time for discounted drinks; it’s a cultural institution that blends relaxation with socializing against the backdrop of this vibrant Mediterranean city. Locals and tourists alike gather in the late afternoon to early evening at bars, cafes, and restaurants scattered throughout the city. From trendy waterfront spots to cozy hidden gems in narrow alleys, Palma offers a diverse array of venues where patrons can unwind with a refreshing cocktail or local wine. Happy hour in Palma de Mallorca isn’t just about the drinks—it’s about enjoying the city’s laid-back atmosphere, savoring tapas or local snacks, and soaking in the Mediterranean ambiance as day turns to night.

The Family

We stayed at an all-inclusive resort so our time focused on the beach and eating. Situated along the scenic Playa de Palma, this elegant hotel features modern amenities, impeccable service, and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. We enjoyed easy access to the beach, where we could soak up the sun, swim in the crystal-clear waters, and partake in a variety of water sports activities.

Mallorca has emerged as the Mediterranean’s premier tourist destination. It boasts a diverse landscape, offering extensive sandy beaches, secluded pristine coves, stunning mountainous regions, and towns and cities steeped in artistic and architectural heritage. For us it was an ideal destination for a relaxing few days before we embarked on a cruise.
