The Family
We didn’t spend a ton of time in San Diego but in addition to the shared experiences mentioned above, we also visited the seals in La Jolla and took a day trip to Tijuana.
La Jolla
One of the most iconic and family-friendly experiences in La Jolla is visiting the seals and sea lions along the stunning coastline. Whether you’re traveling with kids, friends, or just exploring on your own, these playful marine animals are sure to make your day. La Jolla Cove is home to a large population of sea lions who love to sunbathe on the rocky shores and entertain visitors with their antics. Originally built as a protected swimming spot for kids, Children’s Pool beach has since become a seal rookery. Depending on the season, you might even see baby seals (so adorable!).
Tips for Your Visit:
- Bring binoculars if you want to spot seals in the water.
- Early mornings or late afternoons offer fewer crowds and gorgeous light for photos.
- During pupping season (typically December-May), certain areas might be closed to protect the animals, so check ahead.
Tijuana
Located just across the border from San Diego, Tijuana is a dynamic and culturally rich city that offers visitors a taste of Mexico’s vibrant spirit. Known for its bustling street markets, authentic Baja cuisine, and artsy Avenida Revolución, Tijuana is a popular day trip or weekend getaway for travelers exploring Southern California. Back in the day it was very common to take a day trip over the boarder to Tijuana though I am not sure it is as popular now a days.
Summary
San Diego and its surrounding areas truly offer something for everyone, making it an ideal destination whether you’re traveling as a family, a couple, or with friends. From the historic charm of Old Town and the vibrant nightlife of the Gaslamp Quarter to the laid-back surf culture of Pacific Beach and the luxurious coastal beauty of Coronado, every corner of the region has its own unique vibe. Add in the chance to see the famous La Jolla seals, take a ferry across the bay, or even pop down to Tijuana for an international twist, and it’s clear that the San Diego experience is as diverse as it is unforgettable.
