Two Takes on Columbus, Ohio: Cultural Experiences for Every Traveler

Columbus, Ohio, the state’s capital and largest city, is a dynamic metropolis known for its diverse culture, thriving economy, and vibrant arts scene. The city’s eclectic neighborhoods, such as the historic German Village and the trendy Short North Arts District, offer a rich mix of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Columbus is also renowned for its green spaces, including the expansive Scioto Mile and Franklin Park Conservatory. With a bustling downtown, numerous museums, and a variety of festivals and events, Columbus provides a welcoming and exciting environment for residents and visitors alike.

The Same

The DINKs have spent a lot of time in Columbus while the Family has basically passed through a couple of times. Even with the little bit of time the Family has spent there, there is some overlap.

German Village:

German Village is a vibrant, historic neighborhood that beautifully blends the old with the new. Its rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and lively community make it a must-visit destination in Columbus, Ohio. This area hosts events throughout the year. I’ve attended an Adult Trick or Treat during Halloween that was so much fun.

  • Schmidt’s Sausage Haus is a beloved restaurant known for its authentic German cuisine and lively atmosphere. Established in 1886 by the Schmidt family, this iconic eatery has become a local institution, offering a taste of Germany right in the heart of Ohio. Schmidt’s is famous for its hearty German dishes, including their signature sausages, such as the Bahama Mama—a spicy, smoked sausage that’s a crowd favorite. The restaurant boasts an impressive selection of German beers, both on tap and bottled. Guests can enjoy a refreshing pint in the cozy bier hall atmosphere, reminiscent of traditional German beer gardens. No visit to Schmidt’s is complete without trying their legendary jumbo cream puffs. These delightful pastries are filled with rich cream and are the size of your head!
Local Cuisine

Columbus, Ohio, boasts a diverse and vibrant food scene reflecting its rich cultural heritage. Here are some of our local favorites:

  • Buckeye Candy: Named after Ohio’s state tree, these chocolate and peanut butter confections are a local treat.
  • Schmidt’s Sausage Haus: As mentioned above, this is located in the historic German Village, this restaurant is famous for its Bahama Mama sausages and cream puffs.
  • Columbus-Style Pizza: Known for its thin, crispy crust and cut into square pieces, this style is popular in local pizzerias like Donatos and Massey’s.
  • Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams: Founded in Columbus, Jeni’s offers unique, artisanal ice cream flavors that have garnered national acclaim.
  • Tommy’s Diner: A classic spot for hearty breakfasts and traditional American diner fare, beloved by locals.
  • Fast-casual restaurants: Columbus, Ohio is the birthplace of several popular fast-casual restaurant chains including Wendy’s, Charley’s Philly Steaks, Piada Italian Street Food, Hot Chicken Takeover and Bibibop Asian Grill.

The DINKs

A good friend lives in the suburbs outside Columbus, Ohio. I must have been up to visit more than a dozen times in addition to a few work trips. She always takes me to the funest places from sporting events, breweries, shows to even kids museum and zoos once she started her family.

The Ohio State University:

Home to the Buckeyes, one of the most storied collegiate athletic programs in the nation. Whether you bleed scarlet and gray or you’re just looking for an unforgettable sports experience, you’ll enjoy the excitement of a game.

  • Football Games: Attending an Ohio State University (OSU) game is a thrilling experience that goes beyond just the sport. It starts with the vibrant atmosphere of tailgating before football games, where fans gather in the parking lots around Ohio Stadium to grill, play games, and socialize, all while dressed in scarlet and gray. The energy continues to build as you enter the stadium and witness the iconic Ohio State Marching Band, known as “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” performing their intricate and impressive formations during the pregame and halftime shows. Football games are marked by the roar of the crowd, the excitement of each play, and the camaraderie of the fans.
  • Basketball games at the Schottenstein Center offer a different but equally exhilarating experience. The indoor arena buzzes with enthusiasm as fans cheer on the Buckeyes, and the intensity of the games keeps everyone on the edge of their seats. Whether it’s the thrilling action on the court or the spirited performances by the pep band and cheerleaders, OSU basketball games are packed with excitement.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium:

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, located in Powell, Ohio, just north of Columbus, is one of the premier zoos in the United States. Renowned for its comprehensive collection of animals and its commitment to conservation and education, the zoo offers an enriching and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.

  • The zoo is home to over 10,000 animals representing more than 600 species from around the world. Notable exhibits include the Heart of Africa, where visitors can see giraffes, zebras, and cheetahs in expansive savanna habitats; the Congo Expedition, featuring gorillas, bonobos, and other primates; and the Asia Quest, showcasing tigers, red pandas, and elephants.
  • The Shores & Aquarium area features diverse aquatic life, including manatees, which are part of a rehabilitation program. The aquarium also houses colorful coral reefs, jellyfish, and a variety of fish species, providing a fascinating glimpse into underwater ecosystems.
North Market:

North Market, located in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio, is a historic public market that has been a vibrant hub for local food, culture, and community since 1876. As one of the city’s most beloved landmarks, North Market offers a diverse array of culinary delights, unique shopping experiences, and cultural events, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors.

From freshly baked goods, artisanal cheeses, and gourmet coffee to ethnic specialties like Vietnamese pho, Indian curries, and Polish pierogies, there is something to satisfy every palate. The market is a great place to find fresh, locally-sourced produce, meats, and seafood. Beyond food, North Market features a selection of artisanal products, including handmade jewelry, unique crafts, and beautiful flowers. It’s an excellent spot to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs.

The Brewery District

The Brewery District of Columbus, Ohio, is a historic neighborhood with a rich brewing heritage that dates back to the 19th century. Located just south of downtown Columbus, the Brewery District has undergone revitalization in recent years, becoming a vibrant hub for dining, entertainment, and cultural attractions.

The Brewery District offers a diverse culinary scene, with a variety of restaurants, bars, and breweries to choose from. It also boasts a thriving arts community, with numerous galleries, studios, and creative spaces showcasing the work of local artists and a variety of entertainment venues, including theaters, music halls, and performance spaces.

  • Hoster Brewing Company: Founded in 1836, Hoster Brewing Company is one of Columbus’s historic breweries. It became a staple in the local beer scene, known for its high-quality lagers and ales. Although the original brewery ceased operations during Prohibition, the Hoster brand was revived in the late 20th century, bringing back classic recipes and new brews inspired by the original offerings. We enjoyed the food as well.
  • Shadowbox Live, located in the Brewery District of Columbus, Ohio, is the nation’s largest resident theater company, renowned for its dynamic performances and eclectic mix of entertainment. Established in 1988, Shadowbox Live offers a unique blend of rock ‘n’ roll, sketch comedy, and original theatrical productions, creating an immersive and entertaining experience for audiences. Their repertoire includes original rock musicals, sketch comedy revues, tribute shows to iconic musicians, and dramatic productions. Central to many of their performances is live music, featuring talented musicians and vocalists who deliver high-energy rock performances. The live band adds an electrifying element to the shows, enhancing the overall experience. Known for their sharp wit and humor, Shadowbox Live’s sketch comedy revues were our favorite. These shows combine satirical sketches, parodies, and original comedic pieces that leave audiences laughing.
COSI (Center of Science and Industry):

COSI (Center of Science and Industry), located in Columbus, Ohio, is a world-class science center and museum dedicated to sparking curiosity, inspiring discovery, and fostering lifelong learning. Since its founding in 1964, COSI has been a beloved destination for families, students, and science enthusiasts of all ages, offering a wide range of interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and immersive experiences. COSI features over 300 interactive exhibits across a variety of scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and technology. Visitors can engage in hands-on experiments, explore the principles of science, and discover the wonders of the natural world. The American Museum of Natural History DOME Theater at COSI offers stunning full-dome digital projection shows that transport audiences on virtual journeys through space, time, and beyond. Visitors can explore the cosmos, witness the wonders of the universe, and learn about celestial phenomena in an immersive theater environment.

Summary

While both groups explored the charming and historic German Village, their itineraries diverged in noteworthy ways. The DINKs, seasoned visitors to Columbus, delved into a mix of cultural, educational, and recreational activities. Their affinity for games at The Ohio State University, visits to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, and exploration of local culinary delights at North Market highlight their deep connection to the city’s offerings.

Determining who did it better largely depends on individual interests and preferences. Each visit undoubtedly left lasting impressions and fond memories, illustrating that Columbus, Ohio, offers something special for every type of traveler.
