Double-Take on Louisiana: From Jazz-Filled Nights to Bayou Adventures

Louisiana is a captivating blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. Known for its rich Creole and Cajun traditions, the state offers a vibrant mix of French, African, Spanish, and Native American influences. From the bustling streets of New Orleans and its iconic jazz music to the tranquil swamps and bayous, Louisiana’s diverse landscapes and unique cuisine—like gumbo, beignets, and crawfish—reflect the state’s deep cultural roots. Whether you’re exploring historic sites, enjoying lively festivals, or savoring the local flavors, Louisiana offers an unforgettable experience.

Regions

Louisiana is divided into several distinct regions, each with its own unique culture, landscape, and attractions:

  • Florida Parishes: Located in the southeastern corner of the state, these parishes are defined by lush landscapes, historical sites, and small towns that maintain the region’s old-world charm.
  • Southern Louisiana (Acadiana/Cajun Country): Known for its Cajun culture, bayous, and French-speaking communities. The area features unique food, music, and festivals, with Lafayette and Baton Rouge as key cities.
  • New Orleans and the River Parishes: The heart of Louisiana’s cultural and historical scene, this region is home to the vibrant city of New Orleans, with its French Quarter, music, and iconic events like Mardi Gras. The River Parishes, located along the Mississippi River, are steeped in history.
  • North Louisiana: This region offers a blend of southern charm and outdoor adventure. It’s home to beautiful forests, lakes, and the historic town of Shreveport. Known for its natural beauty and Southern hospitality, it’s also famous for its folk and gospel music.
  • Central Louisiana: A mix of the state’s urban and rural landscapes, featuring cities like Alexandria. This region is known for its agriculture, including crops like sugarcane, and has a more laid-back vibe compared to its southern counterparts.

The Same

Our first visit to Louisiana was during a Caribbean cruise stop in New Orleans, where we hit the main attractions. Let’s be honest, if you’re just there to party, one full day is plenty.

We both returned again, The Family stayed in New Orleans but ventured outside the city for a quieter experience, while the DINKs immersed themselves in the urban vibe. Both groups explored the iconic French Quarter and indulged in Creole and Cajun dishes, savoring New Orleans’ unique flavors.

New Orleans (Nola)

Visiting New Orleans is a feast for the senses, from the lively sounds of jazz in the French Quarter to the rich flavors of Creole and Cajun cuisine. Stroll through historic streets, admire the colorful architecture, and experience the city’s vibrant culture through festivals, nightlife, and world-class dining. Whether exploring Bourbon Street, taking a swamp tour, or enjoying beignets at Café Du Monde, NOLA offers an unforgettable blend of history, music, and Southern hospitality.

  • SEE: Bourbon Street, The heart of New Orleans’ nightlife, known for its lively bars, jazz music, and vibrant atmosphere, especially after dark.
  • EAT: Stop at Cafe Du Mond, famous for its beignets and savor Creole and Cajun cuisine, which are integral parts of New Orleans’ culinary identity, offering a flavorful blend of French, African, Spanish, and Native American influences.
  • DRINK: A Hurricane at Pat O’Brien’s, Voodoo Juice from Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar, and a Hand Grenade at Tropical Isle Bar.
  • SPORTS: In addition to having the New Orleans Saints (NFL), the New Orleans Pelicans (NBA) and the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Minor League Baseball), the city has hosted special events like the NBA Allstar Game, the NCAA Final Four and the SuperBowl.
  • STAY: You definitely want to stay near Bourbon Street. We have stayed at Hyatt Regency New Orleans, which is conveniently located right across the street from the stadium and JW Marriott New Orleans, Ideal for Mardi Gras, with easy access to Bourbon Street and the French Quarter.
Swap Tour

A Louisiana swamp tour with Cajun Pride Swamp Tours offers an up-close look at the region’s vibrant wetlands and wildlife. As you glide through moss-draped cypress trees, expert guides share stories of local Cajun culture and the unique ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators, herons, turtles, and other native creatures, all while soaking in the tranquil beauty of the bayou. The tour guide was fun, entertaining, and knowledgeable. We got ours from Groupon but if there is not one available, this one from Get Your Guide is similar.

  • Alligator Encounters: Spot countless alligators basking on the banks or swimming nearby, both large and small.
  • Friendly Raccoons: Watch as raccoons, clearly accustomed to visitors, scurry over as the boat approaches for their snacks.
  • Wild Pig Cameos: Catch wild pigs sneaking in to snatch food meant for the raccoons.
  • Historic Graveyard: Visit a haunting graveyard honoring those who lost their lives during a hurricane.
  • Voodoo Witch’s Resting Place: Discover the eerie grave of a legendary voodoo witch, adding a touch of local lore to the tour.
  • Rustic Hunting Lodge: Pass by an old hunting lodge tucked deep in the swamp, a reminder of Louisiana’s outdoor traditions.
Local Cuisine

Lousiana’s vibrant culinary scene reflects its rich cultural heritage, with Creole and Cajun cuisine blending French, African, Spanish, and Native American influences. We always try to indulge as much as possible—you can’t go wrong anywhere they’re served.

  • Beignets: Deep-fried pastries dusted with powdered sugar, best enjoyed with a café au lait. Café Du Monde is our go-to spot, though you’ll find them all over the city.
  • Gumbo: A hearty stew of meat (chicken, sausage, or seafood), vegetables, and spices, served over rice—a true fusion of West African, French, and Native American flavors.
  • Jambalaya: A one-pot rice dish with sausage, chicken, or seafood, seasoned with spices that highlight Spanish, French, and African roots.
  • Po’boys: Overstuffed sandwiches on French bread with fried seafood (shrimp, oysters, or catfish) or roast beef, dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayo.
  • Crawfish Étouffée: Crawfish tails smothered in a thick roux-based sauce with onions, celery, bell peppers, and Cajun spices, served over rice.
  • Red Beans and Rice: A Monday tradition in New Orleans, made with red beans, onions, bell peppers, and Cajun spices, served over rice.
  • Muffuletta: A round sesame loaf packed with Italian meats, cheese, and olive salad—perfect for sharing and a nod to the city’s Italian influence.

The DINKs

In edition to visiting Nola, we also came back again for Mardi Gras season a little more lowkey so we hit up Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s capital, blends Southern charm, rich history, and vibrant culture. Set along the Mississippi River, the city boasts landmarks like the Louisiana State Capitol, LSU’s lively campus, and historic sites like Magnolia Mound Plantation. Known for its Cajun and Creole cuisine, thriving arts scene, and passionate football culture, Baton Rouge offers a unique taste of Louisiana’s heritage. The Downtown Greenway in Baton Rouge is a network of interconnected bike and pedestrian pathways designed to link the city’s public parks, recreational facilities, inner-city neighborhoods, and cultural attractions.

  • EAT: Crawfish boil @ Sammy’s Grill on Highland
  • DRINK: We tried Tin Roof Brewing Co., but it was closed, so we went to Boudreaux & Thibodeaux’s for local beer on tap.
  • SPORTS: Catch a football or basketball game at LSU
  • STAY: Hyatt Place Baton Rouge – We used points. Likely one of the older Hyatts we’ve stayed at; it was just okay.

Catching a basketball game at LSU is an electrifying experience, with passionate fans packing Pete Maravich Assembly Center to cheer on the Tigers. The energy is contagious, from fast-paced plays to roaring crowd chants. No visit is complete without stopping by to see Mike the Tiger, LSU’s beloved live mascot, in his state-of-the-art habitat—a must-see for fans of all ages.

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo offers a fun, family-friendly experience with diverse wildlife from around the world. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring animals like tigers, giraffes, alligators, and exotic birds while learning about conservation efforts. With interactive experiences and scenic walking paths, it’s a great way to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. Extremely inexpensive and great zoo.

Experiencing live blues music in Louisiana is a must, with soulful rhythms and heartfelt lyrics that capture the spirit of the region. Whether in a cozy Baton Rouge club or a lively New Orleans bar, the raw energy of talented musicians creates an unforgettable atmosphere. Grab a drink, tap your feet, and let the rich sounds of the blues immerse you in the heart of Louisiana’s music scene.

Summary
