The Same

No visit to Maui would be complete without witnessing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park. The DINKs and The Family had very different mornings, but both unforgettable.

The DINKs woke early and drove up the winding road in the pre-dawn darkness, arriving just in time to see the sun rise over a sea of clouds. They sipped coffee, snapped photos, and felt the quiet majesty of Maui from above. They also returned to visit during the day when they had a little more energy to do some hiking.

The Family brought the kids along, bundled in layers, and watched as the sky changed from soft pastels to golden brilliance. The kids marveled at the crater’s sheer size, and we all felt the magic of experiencing such a unique natural wonder together.

Haleakalā National Park:

Home to the world’s largest dormant volcano, Haleakalā National Park is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Witness the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā, where the otherworldly landscape resembles a lunar terrain. Explore the park’s network of hiking trails, ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging treks through native forests and volcanic landscapes.

The Dinks

While our time in Maui’s Upcountry was brief, we made the most of it by visiting the Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery. Set against sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Mount Haleakalā, the experience was both scenic and educational.

We toured the sustainable farm to learn how sugarcane is grown and distilled into their signature vodka, then sampled a few of their spirits while taking in the stunning surroundings.

Afterward, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch on-site, savoring fresh local flavors with one of the best panoramic views on the island, the perfect way to cap off our Upcountry adventure.

Ocean Vodka Organic Farm & Distillery:

The Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery is a scenic, family-owned estate located in Kula, in Maui’s Upcountry region. Spanning 80 acres on the slopes of Haleakalā, the farm is known for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly production. Ocean Vodka is crafted from organic sugarcane and blended with deep ocean mineral water sourced from 3,000 feet below the Kona Coast — a process that gives it a uniquely smooth, clean taste.

Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the distillation process, explore the sugarcane fields, and enjoy tastings of their award-winning spirits, including vodka, rum, and gin. The property also offers a café and picnic area overlooking panoramic views of both the North and South shores of Maui, making it as much a visual treat as it is a tasting experience.

Our guide was engaging and informative, explaining their use of deep ocean mineral water and sustainable farming methods—no herbicides, GMO-free, and gluten-free. The tasting room (about $18 per person) let us sample clean, crisp vodka as we watched the sun dip below the horizon—a perfect backdrop. We also enjoyed small bites and live music from 4:30–7 pm at the Café at the Point . It wasn’t somewhere I’d go out of my way for, but if you’re upcountry with time to spare, it’s a lovely blend of education, scenery, and spirit.

Makawao, Maui

Makawao is the heart of Upcountry Maui’s paniolo (cowboy) culture. This charming town mixes art galleries, boutique shops, and local eateries. Walking through town feels like stepping back in time while still enjoying modern comforts.

Kula, Maui

Iao Valley, Maui
