Tucked between the Grand Strand’s bustle and the serenity of the Lowcountry, Georgetown County, South Carolina offers a captivating blend of history, charm, and coastal beauty. From the working waterfront and oak-lined streets of historic Georgetown to the seafood haven of Murrells Inlet, and from the laid-back luxury of Litchfield Beach to the timeless tranquility of Pawleys Island, each corner of this county tells its own unique story. Whether you’re craving fresh-off-the-boat seafood, scenic marsh views, quiet beach days, or a stroll through centuries-old towns, Georgetown County delivers a slower pace that invites you to stay a little longer—and savor every moment.
The Same
The Family hasn’t had the chance to explore many of South Carolina’s beaches—most visits have been long weekends to Myrtle Beach or Charleston. Their experience with the Palmetto State’s coastline is limited, leaving plenty of sandy shores and charming towns still on their bucket list.
The DINKs, on the other hand, call the South Carolina coast home and have made it a point to dive deep into everything it has to offer. From quiet barrier islands and historic harbors to bustling boardwalks and hidden beach gems, they’ve explored nearly every stretch of sand and coastal town the state has to offer.
Murrells Inlet
Murrells Inlet, located just south of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, is a charming fishing village known for its natural beauty, fresh seafood, and laid-back atmosphere.
MarshWalk:
We loved spending time on the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet—a picturesque boardwalk that winds along the edge of the saltwater marshes and offers some of the most stunning views in the area. As we strolled along the wooden path, we were treated to peaceful scenes of boats gently bobbing in the harbor, egrets wading through the tall grasses, and the sun casting golden reflections across the water.
One of our favorite things about the MarshWalk is the incredible lineup of waterfront restaurants. We stopped for happy hour on more than one occasion—many places offered great specials on drinks and local seafood, making it the perfect way to unwind with a view. Each spot had its own vibe, from laid-back tiki bars to more upscale seafood joints, and we enjoyed hopping from one to the next to sample different flavors.
In the winter, the MarshWalk transforms into a festive wonderland. Holiday lights and decorations are strung along the boardwalk, and the whole place feels cozy and magical despite the cooler temperatures. Whether it’s summer or winter, a visit to the MarshWalk is always a highlight—relaxing, scenic, and full of local flavor.
Brookgreen Gardens: Just a short drive from Murrells Inlet, we discovered one of the most beutiful places in the South Carolina Lowcountry—Brookgreen Gardens. It’s so much more than a botanical garden; it’s a stunning blend of art, nature, and history all in one peaceful, sprawling space.
As we wandered through the beautifully manicured gardens, we were surrounded by towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, colorful blooms that changed with the seasons, and quiet paths that made us feel like we were walking through a living painting. Every turn brought something new—whether it was a tucked-away fountain, a charming bridge over a reflecting pond, or a graceful sculpture that seemed to belong perfectly in its natural setting.
But what really makes Brookgreen special is how it weaves in the cultural and historical threads of the region. We took our time exploring the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve, where we learned about the area’s past—especially its connections to the rice plantations that once thrived here—and even spotted a few alligators and coastal birds along the way.
Brookgreen Gardens felt like a full experience: peaceful, inspiring, and deeply rooted in the heritage of the South Carolina coast. We left feeling refreshed and more connected to the region—and already planning a return visit.
Huntington Beach State Park: Also locateed just next door to Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park quickly became one of our favorite outdoor escapes on the South Carolina coast. We love how it offers that perfect mix of untouched natural beauty and peaceful beach vibes—without the crowds you find at more commercialized spots.
We spent hours exploring the park’s winding nature trails, which took us through maritime forests filled with towering pines and shady oaks. Every step felt like a little adventure, especially when we spotted wildlife along the way—herons wading in the shallows, crabs scuttling across the marsh paths, and even the occasional alligator basking in the sun (from a safe distance, of course!).
One of the highlights for us was wandering out to the salt marsh boardwalk, where we could pause and take in the sweeping views. It’s a great place for birdwatching—bring binoculars if you have them!—and we always find it incredibly peaceful out there, with just the sound of rustling grasses and birds overhead.
And then there’s the beach itself—wide, quiet, and stunning. We loved having space to spread out, take long walks along the shore, and just unwind to the sound of the waves. It’s the kind of beach where you can truly relax, whether you’re reading under an umbrella or splashing in the surf.
We also made sure to check out Atalaya Castle, the historic Moorish-style home of Archer and Anna Huntington, the philanthropists behind both the park and nearby Brookgreen Gardens.
Huntington Beach State Park is the kind of place that makes us feel reconnected—with nature, with history, and with each other. Whether we’re hiking, birdwatching, or just enjoying the beach, we always leave feeling refreshed and grateful that such a special spot is right in our backyard.
Local Cuisine
Murrells Inlet is renowned for its fresh seafood, and visitors can indulge in a variety of culinary delights at the area’s many seafood restaurants. From succulent shrimp and oysters to flavorful fish and crab, it is a must when visiting this area which is why both the DINKS and The Family made sure to check it out.
- Wicked Tuna: The menu features a wide range of seafood dishes, from sushi and sashimi to grilled fish and seafood platters. With its stylish decor, waterfront views, and vibrant atmosphere, Wicked Tuna is a great choice for both casual and special occasions. The rooftop bar is a popular spot for enjoying cocktails while taking in the beautiful sunset over the inlet. We like hanging out at the Shack for Happy Hour with their half priced sushi.
- Sara J’s: While Sara J’s is not on Marshwalk, it offers a charming dining experience with picturesque views of the inlet. Known for its fresh seafood and homestyle cooking, Sara J’s has been a staple in the community for years. The menu includes favorites like crab cakes, stuffed flounder, and shrimp and grits, all prepared with a focus on freshness and flavor. We love this during the offseason when they offer a locals appreciation menu.
The Dinks
We currently reside along the beautiful South Carolina coast, and one of our favorite ways to spend weekends is by exploring the many charming coastal towns and beaches nearby. Over time, we’ve made it a goal to really get to know this stretch of the Lowcountry—one beach, one bite of seafood, and one sunset at a time. We’ve wandered the historic streets of Georgetown, enjoyed the laid-back vibe and waterfront dining in Murrells Inlet, strolled the quiet, oak-lined roads of Pawleys Island, explored the relaxed community of Litchfield Beach, and soaked in the local charm of Garden city and beyond. Each destination has its own unique personality, and we’ve loved discovering the character and coastal beauty that make each place special.
Georgetown
This charming coastal town is steeped in rich history and Southern hospitality. Located along the scenic South Carolina coast, it is the third oldest city in the state. Georgetown offers a blend of historic architecture, quaint shops, and beautiful waterfront views.
Historic Walking Tour including River Walk: We found a little historic walking tour sign and decided to follow it. The tour included:
- Historic District: We strolled through the charming streets of Georgetown’s Historic District, where you can admire beautifully preserved antebellum homes and buildings. Don’t miss the Harborwalk, a scenic boardwalk along the Sampit River.
- Georgetown County Museum: Explore local history through engaging exhibits that showcase the area’s rich heritage, including artifacts from Native American cultures, colonial times, and the Civil War era.
- Kaminski House Museum: Visit this stunning Georgian-style mansion to learn about the architectural and cultural history of Georgetown. The house is filled with period furnishings and offers guided tours.
Pawleys Island:
Renowned as one of the oldest resort areas on the East Coast, we’ve found Pawleys Island to be a true gem, celebrated for its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches, and historic inns. It’s a place that feels timeless, where the worries of the world seem to melt away the moment you arrive. We love how the island maintains its charm, with its peaceful vibe and natural beauty offering a perfect escape. The historic inns, each with its own story, add to the island’s allure, making it feel like we’re stepping back in time while still enjoying all the comforts of a modern getaway. Whether we’re walking along the quiet, sandy shores or savoring a meal at one of the local eateries, Pawleys Island never fails to deliver the ultimate coastal relaxation.
Litchfield Beach:
Known for its pristine beaches and upscale resorts, we’ve found Litchfield Beach to be the perfect escape, offering a more tranquil alternative to its northern neighbors. Unlike the more bustling areas along the coast, Litchfield provides a peaceful retreat where the rhythm of the waves and the quiet beauty of nature are front and center. The pristine, uncrowded beaches invite us to relax and unwind, while the upscale resorts offer a touch of luxury without the overwhelming crowds. We love how the area blends natural beauty with comfort, making it ideal for those moments when we’re seeking a slower pace and a more serene coastal experience. Whether we’re taking a long walk along the shore, enjoying a leisurely meal, or simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, Litchfield always feels like a perfect hideaway.
Garden City:
While we technically live in Horry County, we’re just a stone’s throw away from the Georgetown County line. Garden City Beach is actually the beach we frequent the most, and it holds a special place in our hearts. Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, Garden City offers the perfect mix of relaxation and fun. It’s also home to the iconic Garden City Pier, a spot we love for everything it offers, from breathtaking views to the chance to fish right off the dock.
We find Garden City to be even more laid-back and relaxed than neighboring Surfside Beach, which makes it ideal for when we want to unwind without the crowds. The beach stretches for miles, providing ample space for families to spread out, and the longer beachfront means there are more options for beachfront rentals and hotels—perfect when we want to stay right by the ocean. Plus, with its abundance of marshland, Garden City has some incredible spots for fishing, crabbing, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of the area. One of the things we appreciate most is the free beach parking available, though we’ve learned that if you plan to visit during the summer months, it’s best to arrive before 10 a.m. to snag a spot!
The Garden City Pier is another highlight we love. It’s free to walk, offering fantastic views of the water, and it’s one of our favorite places to relax and take in the scenery. If we’re feeling lucky, we might even try our hand at fishing—though we always make sure to check the requirements for fishing licenses and fees. The pier also features a fun restaurant and bar that often has live music, making it a great place to grab a bite or sip on a drink as the sun sets over the water.
Summary
Georgetown County offers a wonderful mix of history, charm, and coastal beauty that makes it a truly special destination. Whether you’re exploring the historic streets of Georgetown, strolling the peaceful sands of Pawleys Island, enjoying the family-friendly vibe of Garden City, or indulging in the quiet luxury of Litchfield Beach, this area has something for everyone. From scenic marshes to sun-soaked beaches, from delicious seafood to tranquil outdoor escapes, we’ve found that the slower pace of life here invites you to relax, explore, and savor each moment.
