Ultimate Vacation Guide to South Carolina South Strand Beaches

Surfside Beach, Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield Beach, and More

The South Strand:

Stretching south of the iconic Grand Strand or Myrtle Beach, the South Strand encompasses Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach, Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, and Georgetown. This quieter, more laid-back region offers serene beaches, world-class golf, fresh seafood, and charming small-town vibes while keeping all the classic Myrtle Beach attractions within easy reach.

A captivating blend of history, charm, and coastal beauty, from the working waterfront and oak-lined streets of historic Georgetown to the seafood haven of Murrells Inlet, and from the laid-back luxury of Litchfield Beach to the timeless tranquility of Pawleys Island, each corner of this county tells its own unique story.

From scenic oceanfront parks to peaceful marshlands and family-friendly entertainment, the South Strand delivers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and coastal charm.

The Same

The Family hasn’t had the chance to explore many of South Carolina’s beaches with most visits bring long weekends to Myrtle Beach or Charleston but they have visited Murrells Inlet. Their experience with the Palmetto State’s coastline is limited, leaving plenty of sandy shores and charming towns still on their bucket list.

The DINKs, on the other hand, call the South Carolina coast home and have made it a point to dive deep into everything it has to offer. From quiet barrier islands and historic harbors to bustling boardwalks and hidden beach gems, they’ve explored nearly every stretch of sand and coastal town the state has to offer.

Murrells Inlet, SC

Murrells Inlet, located just south of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, is a charming fishing village known for its natural beauty, fresh seafood, and laid-back atmosphere.

MarshWalk:

We loved spending time on the MarshWalk in Murrells Inlet, a picturesque boardwalk that winds along the edge of the saltwater marshes and offers some of the most stunning views in the area. As we strolled along the wooden path, we were treated to peaceful scenes of boats gently bobbing in the harbor, egrets wading through the tall grasses, and the sun casting golden reflections across the water.

One of our favorite things about the MarshWalk is the incredible lineup of waterfront restaurants. We stopped for happy hour on more than one occasion—many places offered great specials on drinks and local seafood, making it the perfect way to unwind with a view.

In the winter, the MarshWalk transforms into a festive wonderland. Holiday lights and decorations are strung along the boardwalk, and the whole place feels cozy and magical despite the cooler temperatures. Whether it’s summer or winter, a visit to the MarshWalk is always a highlight—relaxing, scenic, and full of local flavor.

Brookgreen Gardens:

Just a short drive from Murrells Inlet, Brookgreen Gardens is one of the most beautiful destinations in the South Carolina Lowcountry. More than a botanical garden, it’s a unique blend of art, nature, and history in one peaceful, sprawling space.

As we explored the manicured gardens, towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss surrounded us. Colorful seasonal blooms and quiet walking paths made it feel like we were strolling through a living painting. Every turn revealed something new; A hidden fountain, a charming bridge over a reflecting pond, or a graceful sculpture perfectly set in nature.

What makes Brookgreen Gardens truly special is its cultural and historical significance. The Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve highlights the area’s past, including the rice plantations that once thrived here. We also spotted alligators, herons, and other coastal wildlife along the trails.

Huntington Beach State Park:

Also located just next door to Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park quickly became one of our favorite outdoor escapes on the South Carolina coast. We love how it offers that perfect mix of untouched natural beauty and peaceful beach vibes, without the crowds you find at more commercialized spots.

One of the highlights for us was wandering out to the marshes, looking for alligators. Be cautious because there are a lot of them. There are also board walk platforms that jet out into the ponds where we could pause and take in the sweeping views. It’s a great place for birdwatching (bring binoculars if you have them!)

And then there’s the beach itself, wide, quiet, and stunning. We loved having space to spread out, take long walks along the shore, and just unwind to the sound of the waves. It’s the kind of beach where you can truly relax, whether you’re reading under an umbrella or splashing in the surf. There is a playground for kids at the main parking lot to the beach.

We also made sure to check out Atalaya Castle, the historic Moorish-style home of Archer and Anna Huntington, the philanthropists behind both the park and nearby Brookgreen Gardens.

Huntington Beach State Park is the kind of place that makes us feel reconnected—with nature, with history, and with each other. Whether we’re hiking, birdwatching, or just enjoying the beach, we always leave feeling refreshed and grateful that such a special spot is right in our backyard.

The park’s Nature Center may be small, but it’s packed with hands-on fun and local wildlife. Kids (and curious adults) can gently touch a stingray, horseshoe crab, and other marine creatures in the popular touch tank. Several resident turtles and snakes add to the experience, while educational displays highlight the area’s ecosystems, making it a quick but memorable stop during your visit.

Bars and Restaurants

Murrells Inlet is renowned for its fresh seafood, and visitors can indulge in a variety of culinary delights at the area’s many seafood restaurants. From succulent shrimp and oysters to flavorful fish and crab, it is a must when visiting this area which is why both the DINKS and The Family made sure to check it out.

  • Wicked Tuna (On Marshwalk): The menu features a wide range of seafood dishes, from sushi and sashimi to grilled fish and seafood platters. We like hanging out at the Shack for Happy Hour with their half priced sushi.
  • Bovine’s (On Marshwalk): Bovine’s a waterfront favorite known for wood-fired pizzas and hearty calzones, plus excellent happy hour deals that pair perfectly with the inlet views.
  • Suck Bang Blow is a legendary biker bar famous for its live music, rowdy atmosphere, and open-air burnouts, making it a must-stop spot for motorcycle enthusiasts or anyone wanting live music.
Golf Course

While my husband hasn’t teed off on as many South Strand courses as he has around the Grand Strand or up north, he’s managed to play a couple here—and has several more on his must-play list. Murrells Inlet’s golf scene may be smaller, but the mix of Lowcountry scenery and laid-back vibes makes every round worth the trip.

  • Indigo Creek Golf Club (Budget) – A scenic layout lined with ancient oaks and creeks, this par-72 course blends Lowcountry beauty with a fun, forgiving design that appeals to all skill levels.

The Dinks

We currently reside along the beautiful South Carolina coast, and one of our favorite ways to spend weekends is by exploring the many charming coastal towns and beaches nearby. Over time, we’ve made it a goal to really get to know this stretch of the Lowcountry—one beach, one bite of seafood, and one sunset at a time. We’ve wandered the historic streets of Georgetown, enjoyed the laid-back vibe and waterfront dining in Murrells Inlet, strolled the quiet, oak-lined roads of Pawleys Island, explored the relaxed community of Litchfield Beach, and soaked in the local charm of Garden city and beyond. Each destination has its own unique personality, and we’ve loved discovering the character and coastal beauty that make each place special.

With two miles of wide, sandy shoreline, gentle surf, and a welcoming small-town vibe, it’s perfect for families, couples, and anyone seeking a quieter coastal escape. Visitors can enjoy classic beach fun, a lively dining scene, and year-round events while staying close to all the attractions of the Grand Strand but without the crowds.

  • Crabby Mike’s Calabash Seafood – Famous all-you-can-eat seafood buffet featuring crab legs, oysters, and a wide variety of Lowcountry favorites. If you are going to do a seafood buffet, this is the one.

Georgetown, SC

This charming coastal town is steeped in rich history and Southern hospitality. Located along the scenic South Carolina coast, it is the third oldest city in the state. Georgetown offers a blend of historic architecture, quaint shops, and beautiful waterfront views.

Historic Walking Tour including River Walk:

We found a little historic walking tour sign and decided to follow it. The tour included:

  • Historic District: We strolled through the charming streets of Georgetown’s Historic District, where you can admire beautifully preserved antebellum homes and buildings. Don’t miss the Harborwalk, a scenic boardwalk along the Sampit River.
  • Georgetown County Museum: Explore local history through engaging exhibits that showcase the area’s rich heritage, including artifacts from Native American cultures, colonial times, and the Civil War era.
  • Kaminski House Museum: Visit this stunning Georgian-style mansion to learn about the architectural and cultural history of Georgetown. The house is filled with period furnishings and offers guided tours.

Pawleys Island:

One of the oldest resort areas on the East Coast, we’ve find Pawleys Island to be a true gem, celebrated for its laid-back atmosphere, stunning beaches, and historic inns. It’s a place that feels timeless, where the worries of the world seem to melt away the moment you arrive.

We love how the island maintains its charm, with its peaceful vibe and natural beauty offering a perfect escape. The historic inns, each with its own story, add to the island’s allure, making it feel like we’re stepping back in time while still enjoying all the comforts of a modern getaway.

Whether we’re walking along the quiet, sandy shores or savoring a meal at one of the local eateries, Pawleys Island never fails to deliver the ultimate coastal relaxation.

Litchfield Beach, SC:

Known for its pristine beaches and upscale resorts, we’ve found Litchfield Beach to be the perfect escape, offering a more tranquil alternative to its northern neighbors.

Unlike the more bustling areas along the coast, Litchfield provides a peaceful retreat where the rhythm of the waves and the quiet beauty of nature are front and center. The pristine, uncrowded beaches invite us to relax and unwind, while the upscale resorts offer a touch of luxury without the overwhelming crowds.

We love how the area blends natural beauty with comfort, making it ideal for those moments when we’re seeking a slower pace and a more serene coastal experience. Whether we’re taking a long walk along the shore, enjoying a leisurely meal, or simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, Litchfield always feels like a perfect hideaway.

Garden City, SC:

While we technically live in Horry County, we’re just a stone’s throw away from the Georgetown County line. Garden City Beach is actually the beach we frequent the most, and it holds a special place in our hearts.

Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, Garden City offers the perfect mix of relaxation and fun. It’s also home to the iconic Garden City Pier, a spot we love for everything it offers, from breathtaking views to the chance to fish right off the dock. Plus, with its abundance of marshland, Garden City has some incredible spots for fishing, crabbing, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of the area.

Beach

We find Garden City to be even more laid-back and relaxed than neighboring Surfside Beach, which makes it ideal for when we want to unwind without the crowds.

The beach stretches for miles, providing ample space for families to spread out, and the longer beachfront means there are more options for beachfront rentals and hotels, perfect when we want to stay right by the ocean.

  • Free Parking: One of the things we appreciate most is the free beach parking available, though we’ve learned that if you plan to visit during the summer months, it’s best to arrive before 10 a.m. to snag a spot!
  • The Garden City Pier: The Garden City Pier is another highlight we love. It’s free to walk, offering fantastic views of the water, and it’s one of our favorite places to relax and take in the scenery. If you are feeling lucky, you might even try your hand at fishing, though make sure to check the requirements for fishing licenses and fees. The pier also features a fun restaurant and bar that often has live music, making it a great place to grab a bite or sip on a drink as the sun sets over the water.
Bars & Restaurants

Garden City may be small, but its food and drink scene delivers big flavor and laid-back coastal charm. From casual seafood shacks to lively waterfront bars, you’ll find plenty of spots to grab a cold drink, fresh seafood, or a quick bite after a day on the beach or pier

  • The Salty Pickle (Garden City, SC) Casual beachfront bar and grill known for seafood baskets, refreshing drinks, and a lively, family-friendly atmosphere. We occasionally stop in for a hotdog and a drink if we don’t pack our lunch for the beach. The homemade pickles are awesome.
  • Conch Café – Oceanfront dining with fresh seafood, steaks, and tropical cocktails, plus sweeping Atlantic views from the outdoor deck.
  • Sara J’s Seafood Restaurant – Longtime favorite offering fresh, locally caught seafood with picturesque inlet views.

Summary

Georgetown County offers a wonderful mix of history, charm, and coastal beauty that makes it a truly special destination.
