The Same

The Family and The Dinks explored the charming town together at one point, visiting iconic landmarks like the Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) with its striking architecture and rich history. They wandered through the bustling piazza, taking in the lively atmosphere and admiring the picturesque surroundings. Exploring the city’s shops, they discovered local crafts, souvenirs, and delightful treats, immersing themselves in the vibrant culture of this beautiful coastal destination. Then they also went back and visited separately.

Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi)

A magnificent and historic cathedral located in the heart of the town. The cathedral’s origins date back to the 9th century when it was founded as a basilica dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew. The Crypt was built in 1203 by the cardinal Pietro Capuano who on May 8th, 1208, placed there the relics of Saint Andrew, buried in the center of the crypt. Adjacent to the cathedral is a majestic bell tower that stands tall over the town.

Piazza del Duomo

Right outside the cathedral is Amalfi’s central square, surrounded by shops and restaurants. Branching off are beautiful side streets great for shopping or stop off to get a bite to eat. Spend time exploring Amalfi’s winding alleyways, each one revealing hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. From artisan boutiques selling handmade ceramics to family-run trattorias serving up traditional Amalfi Coast cuisine, the town offered a delightful blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication.

Shopping

Shopping in Amalfi, Italy, offers a delightful blend of local craftsmanship, Mediterranean charm, and coastal elegance. Visitors to this picturesque town on the Amalfi Coast can explore narrow streets lined with boutique shops offering handmade ceramics, intricately woven textiles, and locally produced limoncello. The town’s vibrant markets burst with fresh produce, regional delicacies like sfogliatella pastries, and artisanal goods showcasing centuries-old traditions. Whether browsing for souvenirs, savoring the aromas of local cuisine, or admiring the views of azure waters and pastel-colored buildings, shopping in Amalfi promises a memorable experience that captures the essence of Italian coastal living.

  • Since Amalfi is famous for its production of Limoncello, a lemon liqueur made from locally grown lemons, this is a perfect place to pick some up. You’ll find numerous shops selling bottles of this refreshing beverage, often presented in beautifully decorated bottles that make for perfect souvenirs or gifts.
  • The Amalfi Coast is renowned for its traditional ceramic craftsmanship, and Amalfi is no exception. Explore local ceramic shops to discover hand-painted tiles, pottery, tableware, and decorative items adorned with vibrant colors and intricate designs inspired by the Mediterranean landscape.
  • Italian leather craftsmanship is world-renowned, and Amalfi offers plenty of opportunities to shop for high-quality leather goods. From stylish handbags and wallets to belts and shoes, you’ll find a range of leather products crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
Atrani

Atrani is a small, charming village located just a short walk via tunnel from Amalfi. And then down stairs to enter the main courtyard and streets. It’s known for its picturesque beach, which is a quieter alternative to the more bustling beaches in nearby towns.

The DINKs

Because Amalfi is the central hub, we spent a ton of time here. We prefer to travel by ferry and that often gave us 45 mins to an hour to hang around Amalfi shopping at the stores or grabbing a drink at one of the beach side restaurants. The waterfront promenade is a great place to relax and watch fishing boats in the harbor, their colorful sails casting reflections on the azure waters below or dip your toes in the water on the small beach.

One of the highlights of my visit was admiring the cathedral’s stunning 13th-century Cloister of Paradise, a tranquil oasis of greenery and tranquility. As I wandered through the cloister’s elegant arcades and lush gardens, I was struck by the sense of peace and serenity that pervaded the space, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Amalfi outside.

Atrani’s historic center is a maze of whitewashed buildings adorned with colorful flowers, creating a postcard-perfect scene at every turn. Unlike its more bustling neighbor, Amalfi, Atrani exudes a sense of serenity and seclusion, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking a quieter escape along the coast.

One of the highlights of my visit to Atrani was exploring its scenic waterfront promenade, where fishing boats bob gently in the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. From here, I soaked in panoramic views of the rugged coastline and towering cliffs that define the Amalfi Coast, feeling a sense of awe at the natural beauty that surrounded me. It’s a much quieter waterfront than Amalfi.

The Family

We actually spent more time in Atrani. At the heart of Atrani lies the charming Piazza Umberto I, where locals gather to socialize and enjoy the simple pleasures of Italian life. Cafes and trattorias spill onto the cobblestone square, offering delicious fare and refreshing drinks against a backdrop of ancient architecture and sun-dappled streets.

My little one needed to use the restroom so we grabbed a table to have some wine while the kids played in one of the courtyards. They had a blast running around and trying the water from the fountains.
