Discover the Capital District: A Local’s Guide to Must-Do Activities

Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Saratoga

The Capital District includes the counties of Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and sometimes surrounding areas. It’s located in the eastern part of New York State, along the Hudson River.

While we both grew up in this area, The Family still resides there and definitely are the experts on what to do. Here is a quick summary of the area before we dive into our individual favorites.

  • Albany: Albany is the capital city of New York and the largest city in the Capital District. It’s known for its historic architecture, government buildings, and cultural attractions.
    • The Empire State plaza is the center of these government buildings and during the summer they have concerts and festivals.
  • Saratoga: Saratoga Springs is a charming city located in Saratoga County, New York. It is renowned for its historical significance, natural mineral springs, vibrant arts scene, and horse racing culture.
    • The Saratoga Race Course is the oldest and most prestigious horse racing venues in the United States. It hosts the annual summer meet, which we always try to make it for.
    • SPAC is a renowned outdoor amphitheater in Saratoga Spa State Park. It hosts a variety of performances, including classical concerts by the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
  • Schenectady: The Stockade Historic District feels like a journey back in time created by the Cobblestone streets and well-preserved colonial-era homes.

The Same

While our favorite experiences might differ a little, we are exactly the same when it comes to recommendations for local cuisine.

Local Cuisine

The Capital District of New York, encompassing Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, offers a diverse culinary scene with a mix of local favorites and international cuisines.

  • Saratoga Chips: Saratoga chips, often considered the precursor to the modern potato chip, originated in Saratoga Springs, just north of the Capital District. These thin-sliced, crispy potatoes are typically served as a side dish or snack and are a local favorite. (We always pick up a bag to take to the racetrack with us or one of the many lakes.)
  • Freihofer’s Cookies: Freihofer’s Bakery, founded in the Capital District, is famous for its delicious cookies, including chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin varieties. These cookies are widely enjoyed for their homemade taste and quality ingredients.
  • Stewart’s Ice Cream: Stewart’s Shops, a regional convenience store chain, is renowned for its creamy and flavorful ice cream. Their ice cream flavors range from traditional favorites like chocolate and vanilla to unique creations such as mint cookie crumble and peanut butter pandemonium.
  • Mozzarella sticks with Melba sauce are a delightful appetizer featuring crispy breaded mozzarella cheese sticks served with a tangy and sweet raspberry-based dipping sauce. This combination offers a savory-meets-sweet flavor profile that is popular in some restaurants and eateries, providing a unique twist on a classic snack.
  • Apple Cider Donuts: Especially popular in the fall during apple season, apple cider donuts are a local treat. These donuts are made with apple cider and often dusted with cinnamon sugar, providing a deliciously sweet and seasonal snack.
  • New York-style Pizza: Look for pizzerias that serve classic New York-style pizza with a thin, foldable crust topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Some places in the Capital District put their own spin on this iconic dish. And trust me, it is better than anything I’ve had outside of New York state.
  • Chicken Spiedies: While traditionally associated with Binghamton, Chicken Spiedies (marinated and grilled chicken skewers) can be found in some restaurants and festivals around the Capital District. They are typically served on a hoagie roll or over rice.
  • Chicken Riggies: Created in Utica but enjoyed in some Capital District restaurants, Chicken Riggies is a hearty pasta dish featuring rigatoni pasta with chicken, peppers, onions, and a spicy tomato-cream sauce. It’s a comforting and flavorful meal that showcases Italian-American influences in the region.
  • Beef on Weck: While traditionally associated with Buffalo, Beef on Weck sandwiches (roast beef on a kummelweck roll with horseradish and au jus) can sometimes be found in delis and restaurants in the Capital District. It’s a savory and satisfying sandwich option.
  • Friendly’s Ice Cream: Friendly’s, originally founded in Massachusetts but popular in the Capital District, is known for its nostalgic ice cream sundaes, cones, and frozen treats. Their offerings include a variety of flavors and toppings, making it a favorite spot for families and ice cream enthusiasts alike.
