During our visit to Louisville, we made sure to indulge in some of the city’s most iconic dishes, including the famous Hot Brown, Derby Pie, and bourbon-infused delights.

  • Hot Brown: Originating from the historic Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville, the Hot Brown is a decadent open-faced sandwich that has become a local culinary legend. It typically consists of turkey, bacon, and tomatoes smothered in Mornay sauce and baked until bubbly. Churchill Downs

One of the highlights of our trip was exploring the historic Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. While we did not go for the Derby, it is still amazing when there is a meet in session. We began our visit with a tour of the racetrack, led by a knowledgeable guide who shared fascinating insights into the history and traditions of Churchill Downs. We learned about the track’s origins, dating back to its founding in 1875 by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. As we explored the grounds, we were able to see the historic grandstands, paddock area, and winner’s circle, where victorious jockeys and horses are celebrated after each race. We also had the opportunity to visit the Kentucky Derby Museum, located adjacent to the racetrack, which houses a treasure trove of memorabilia and exhibits highlighting the history of the Derby. Of course, the highlight of our visit to Churchill Downs was experiencing a live horse race. We were fortunate enough to attend a race day event, where we cheered on the horses as they thundered down the track, surrounded by the electrifying energy of the crowd. As we watched the races unfold, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the skill and athleticism of the horses and jockeys. It was truly a thrilling experience to witness the timeless tradition of horse racing at Churchill Downs, and one that I will cherish for years to come.

Wagner’s Pharmacy in Louisville, Kentucky, is a historic establishment that has been serving the community since 1922. Located near Churchill Downs, it has become a beloved spot for both locals and visitors, particularly those attending the famous Kentucky Derby. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, it celebrates the iconic Louisville Slugger baseball bat, which has been synonymous with the sport for generations. Visitors can explore exhibits that trace the bat-making process from forest to field, showcasing the artistry and innovation behind each bat. We also visited the Muhammad Ali Center, which celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary boxer and Louisville native. The Muhammad Ali Center is situated on the city’s riverfront, the center provides an immersive experience through exhibits that chronicle Ali’s boxing career, his activism for social justice, and his impact on the world. Interactive displays and multimedia presentations offer insights into Ali’s charisma, resilience, and commitment to principles such as respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, spirituality, and giving. The Muhammad Ali Center serves as both a museum and a cultural education center, inspiring visitors to champion their own causes and embody the spirit of greatness exemplified by Muhammad Ali.

The Louisville Bats baseball game is a thrilling experience that allows fans to enjoy Minor League Baseball Louisville Bats games are known for their family-friendly atmosphere, with entertainment options for fans of all ages. From between-innings games and activities to mascot appearances and giveaways, there’s always something fun happening at the ballpark to keep fans engaged and entertained.

The Bourbon Trail

The Bourbon Trail is a renowned destination for bourbon enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to explore the rich history, craftsmanship, and flavors of Kentucky’s signature spirit. When we embarked on our journey along the Bourbon Trail, we were excited to immerse ourselves in the world of bourbon and discover the distinct distilleries that call Kentucky home.

  • Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse: This distillery is located in Louisville’s historic Butchertown neighborhood and offers tours, tastings, and a rooftop bar with stunning views of the city. Our adventure began with a visit to one of the trail’s iconic distilleries, where we were greeted by the inviting aroma of aging bourbon and the sight of gleaming copper stills. We embarked on a guided tour of the facility, led by knowledgeable experts who shared the fascinating process of bourbon production, from mashing and fermentation to distillation and aging in charred oak barrels.
  • Maker’s Mark Distillery: This distillery is located just outside of Louisville in Loretto, Kentucky. Maker’s Mark is known for its signature small batch bourbon and its iconic red wax seal. They offer tours that showcase their unique barrel-dipping process.
Riverboat Cruise

We took a leisurely riverboat cruise along the Ohio River to explore the city’s scenic waterfront and iconic landmarks from a unique perspective. As we set sail, we embarked on a relaxing journey down the Ohio River, soaking in the sights and sounds of Louisville’s vibrant waterfront. From the deck of the riverboat, we enjoyed stunning views of the city skyline, with its towering skyscrapers and historic buildings. We also passed by charming waterfront parks, bustling marinas, and scenic green spaces, including Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge, which spanned the river in all its majestic beauty. Throughout the cruise, our knowledgeable guide provided fascinating commentary about the history and significance of the Ohio River, as well as interesting facts about the landmarks and attractions we encountered along the way. We learned about Louisville’s rich maritime heritage, its role as a major transportation hub, and the importance of the Ohio River to the city’s economy and culture.

There are two historic riverboats you can experience in Louisville, Kentucky: the Belle of Louisville and the Mary M. Miller.

  • The Belle of Louisville: This iconic steamboat is the oldest operating riverboat in the United States and a National Historic Landmark. It offers a variety of cruises on the Ohio River, including lunch, dinner, and sightseeing cruises. You can also enjoy special events on board, such as live music nights and themed cruises.
  • The Mary M. Miller: This is Louisville’s newest riverboat, named after America’s first female licensed steamboat captain. It offers similar cruises to the Belle of Louisville, with a focus on modern amenities and a more spacious interior.

One of the things we loved most about Louisville was its vibrant waterfront area along the Ohio River. We took a leisurely stroll along the Big Four Bridge, a converted railroad bridge that offers stunning views of the city skyline and the river below. We also enjoyed exploring Waterfront Park, where we picnicked, played games, and watched boats pass by.

We had a very special Louisville experience. We won a local promotion to the Kentucky Derby that included flight, hotel, a luxurious limo ride, and exclusive cocktail parties, I knew that an unforgettable adventure awaited us. One of the highlights of the experience was the luxurious limo ride that awaited us. As I stepped into the sleek vehicle, we were greeted by the epitome of elegance and sophistication. Cruising through the streets of Louisville in style, we felt like VIPs, soaking in the sights and sounds of the bustling city. Honestly I can’t imagine managing the craziness that the Derby brings with a toddler if it had not been for us being escorted the entire weekend. Winning tickets to the Kentucky Derby was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all my expectations. From the thrill of the race to the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts, every moment was filled with excitement and wonder
