Both Maiori and Minori are lesser-known but equally charming towns on the Amalfi Coast, Italy. Maiori and Minori share a rich history intertwined with the broader cultural tapestry of the region.
Dating back to ancient times, these coastal towns were inhabited by the Etruscans and later became Roman settlements. Maiori, historically known for its role as a maritime hub and agricultural center, benefited from its fertile lands and strategic location for trade. Throughout the Middle Ages, Maiori and Minori, like many Amalfi Coast towns, flourished under the maritime Republic of Amalfi, contributing to the region’s reputation as a maritime power and cultural center. The towns endured periods of prosperity and hardship, witnessing invasions, conflicts, and shifts in political power.
In more recent centuries, Maiori and Minori evolved into popular tourist destinations, celebrated for their picturesque landscapes, historic churches, and quaint streets lined with colorful houses. Today, they continue to attract visitors with their rich history, Mediterranean charm, and hospitality, offering a blend of ancient allure and modern amenities amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Amalfi Coast.
The Same
Maiori, Italy holds a unique place in our hearts as this is where the DINKs were married. It was where we all stayed the entire wedding week and served as the hub of all our activities. Minori, is a short walk or slightly longer hike from Maiori.
Maiori
Maiori, a picturesque town on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, is celebrated for its long sandy beach, the largest along the coastline, historic landmarks, and welcoming atmosphere. Once a retreat for Roman aristocrats, Maiori features sites like the Castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano and the Church of Santa Maria a Mare. Visitors can stroll through charming streets lined with colorful buildings, enjoy coastal hikes with stunning sea views, and savor local seafood and lemon-infused cuisine. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking a mix of relaxation, history, and authentic Amalfi culture.
Beach
Maiori boasts one of the largest and most beautiful beaches on the Amalfi Coast. Stretching along the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Maiori Beach is knowned for its soft golden sands and tranquil Mediterranean atmosphere. Framed by lush hillsides dotted with lemon groves and colorful houses, the beach offers visitors a perfect blend of relaxation and natural beauty. Whether sunbathing, swimming in the clear waters, or strolling along the promenade lined with cafes and gelaterias, Maiori Beach provides a serene escape with picturesque views of the coastal cliffs and the charming town. We visited in April and even couple days were warm enough to get in the water but even on those other days, it was a beautify place to relax.
Maiori Marina
The Maiori Marina is not only functional for the town’s fishing industry but also a charming spot for visitors. From here, we took a boat tour along the coast, and caught the ferry to the other nearby Amalfi Coast towns. The harbor area is surrounded by beautiful beaches, restaurants, and cafes, making it a vibrant and scenic hub for both locals and tourists. It also has beautiful views of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano perched on the hill top.
The Norman Tower
Also known as the Torre Normanna, is believed to date back to the 12th century, served as a defensive structure during the medieval period, providing protection to the town and its inhabitants from potential threats. Its strategic location along the coast allowed for surveillance of the surrounding area and early warning of approaching danger. Today it is home to one of the best restaurants on the entire Amalfi coast, Ristorante Torre Normanna. We had our rehearsal dinner here and now it is a must on every visit.
Hotel Club 2 Torri
Hotel Club 2 Torri in Maiori offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and a prime location for exploring the region. Renowned for friendly and attentive service, ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay. Its luxurious accommodations and excellent service, the hotel provides a serene and picturesque setting for guests. I’m pretty sure every room has a private balcony overlooking the sea. We not only stayed here for the week of our wedding but also had our reception here in the dining room. They went above and beyond on anything and everything they did.
Minori
Minori, a charming town on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, is steeped in history dating back to its Roman roots as “Rheginna Minor.” Once a thriving Roman resort, the town still showcases ancient villas, thermal baths, and beautifully preserved mosaics. Today, Minori captivates visitors with its cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings, and panoramic sea views. Known for its rich culture, delicious lemon-infused cuisine, and warm local hospitality, Minori offers a quieter, authentic escape on the Amalfi Coast.
Beach
Minori Beach is known for its relaxed, less crowded atmosphere compared to some of the more famous beaches in the region. The beach features a mix of sand and pebbles, with clear, calm waters ideal for swimming. It’s a popular spot for families due to its gentle waves and convenient location near restaurants, cafes, and gelato shops.
Roman Villa Marittima
The Roman Villa Marittima was discovered in the 20th century during excavations in Minori. It is believed to have been a luxurious seaside residence belonging to wealthy Roman citizens, showcasing the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by the elite during the Roman era. Visitors to the Roman Villa Marittima can explore the ruins of the villa, which include well-preserved architectural features such as mosaic floors, frescoes, and thermal baths. These archaeological remains offer insight into the layout and design of a typical Roman villa, as well as the daily lives of its inhabitants. Its proximity to the town center also indicates its importance as a social and cultural hub in ancient times. It is free to visit.
Local Cuisine
Maiori and Minori boast a rich culinary heritage that reflects their coastal roots and Mediterranean influences.
- Scialatielli ai Frutti di Mare: A traditional pasta dish featuring thick, short noodles served with a medley of fresh seafood like clams, mussels, and shrimp in a savory tomato sauce.
- Delizia al Limone: A lemon delight dessert, showcasing the famous Amalfi lemons in a creamy, zesty treat that’s a local favorite.
- Alici marinate: Marinated anchovies served with lemon and herbs, a perfect appetizer to start a meal.
- Ndunderi: A unique type of pasta believed to date back to Roman times, typically served with a rich tomato sauce or fresh pesto.
- Sfogliatella Santa Rosa: Sfogliatella is a delicate pastry characterized by its flaky, layered crust and rich, creamy filling originating from the nearby convent of Santa Rosa.
- Pasticceria Sal De Riso for the renowned for sfogliatella, taking great pride in creating sfogliatelle using time-honored recipes and the finest ingredients, resulting in a pastry that is both delicious and authentic to the flavors of the Amalfi Coast.
- Pesce all’Acqua Pazza: Fish cooked in “crazy water,” a simple but flavorful broth of tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and herbs.
- Torta Caprese al Limone: A lemon-flavored almond cake, offering a gluten-free dessert option that’s rich and delicious.
- Granita di Limone: Refreshing lemon granita, a semi-frozen dessert perfect for cooling off on a warm day.

The Path of the Lemons
Sentiero dei Limoni is a scenic walking trail that winds its way through the picturesque lemon groves of the Amalfi Coast in Italy, including the town of Minori. This enchanting pathway offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the region’s iconic lemon orchards while enjoying breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. As you stroll along the Path of the Lemons, you’ll be surrounded by the fragrant scent of citrus fruits and the vibrant colors of the lemon trees. The trail meanders through terraced hillsides and verdant gardens, passing by ancient stone walls and charming farmhouses along the way. Because it is still used today, we were lucky enough to witness donkeys carrying the fresh picked lemons along the path. Whether you’re a nature lover, a food enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape amidst the beauty of southern Italy, a leisurely stroll along this fragrant pathway is sure to be a memorable highlight of your visit to Minori and the Amalfi Coast.
The Family
We actually didn’t know about the Path of the lemons when we visited or we definitely would have tried it. Especially now that my children are older and can walk on their own. (Not sure those steps sound like something I would have wanted to do with my little one at that time.)
