Two Takes on Michigan: Big City Buzz vs. Small Town Charm

Including Detroit & Ann Arbor

Michigan, also known as the Great Lakes State, is a diverse and dynamic destination offering a wealth of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and outdoor adventures. Michigan offers diverse recreational opportunities amidst its Great Lakes, including swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking along the scenic shorelines of Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie. The state also boasts stunning national parks and forests like Isle Royale, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Pictured Rocks, perfect for exploring pristine wilderness and enjoying rugged landscapes and wildlife encounters.

Michigan’s history is deeply intertwined with its geography and natural resources. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes like the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Ottawa, the region became a focal point for European exploration and fur trade in the 17th century. French settlers established missions and trading posts, but after the French and Indian War, Michigan came under British control. It later became part of the United States through the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The state’s industrialization boomed in the 19th century with the rise of lumbering, mining, and manufacturing, transforming cities like Detroit into major industrial centers. Today, Michigan is known for its cultural diversity, automotive heritage, and natural beauty, attracting visitors and residents alike to its lakes, forests, and vibrant urban areas.

The Detroit Tigers (MLB), Detroit Lions (NFL), Detroit Pistons (NBA), and Detroit Red Wings (NHL) all call the city home, and attending a game at one of their iconic venues is a quintessential Detroit experience.

Detroit Red Wings (NHL – National Hockey League): The Detroit Red Wings, one of the most successful franchises in NHL history, play their home games at Little Caesars Arena alongside the Pistons. One of the most iconic features of Detroit pizza is its “cheese crown” – a crispy layer of cheese that forms along the edges of the pan, adding an extra layer of indulgence to every bite. We honestly did not expect to enjoy it as much as we did. We got a pie from Buddy’s Pizza. This iconic pizza chain (since 1946) is credited with inventing Detroit-style pizza. They have locations around Metro Detroit, including the original downtown location on Conant Street. The crust was so crispy and toppings plentiful.
  • Greek cuisine also holds a special place in Detroit, particularly in the historic Greektown district, where you can savor traditional dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and baklava.
