Duluth, situated on the shores of Lake Superior, is the region’s largest city and serves as a gateway to outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and exploring the scenic North Shore.
  • Northwest Minnesota: This region includes Cities like Moorhead and Bemidji and is characterized by its expansive prairies, lakes, and agricultural landscapes.

The Same

The family has only visited MN once on a cross-country road trip while the Dinks have visited a couple times. The Dinks enjoyed their visit to Pipestone National Monument during their first trip to Minnesota, and they highly recommended it to the Family during their cross-country road trip. This was the only overlap in their experiences.

Pipestone National Monument – Southwest Region

Pipestone National Monument, located in southwestern Minnesota, is a culturally and historically significant site that preserves the tradition of pipestone quarrying by Native American tribes. Both the Dinks and the Family visited this national monument and given it’s size they did it pretty much the same way.

Pipestone National Monument is sacred to many Native American tribes, including the Dakota, Lakota, and other Plains tribes. The site has been used for thousands of years as a source of pipestone—a type of red claystone used to carve ceremonial pipes, also known as peace pipes. Visitors to the monument can learn about the cultural significance of pipestone to Native American peoples and the traditional methods of quarrying and carving pipes.

The monument features several active pipestone quarries where visitors can observe the process of extracting pipestone from the earth. Quarrying is still conducted using traditional methods, with Native American artisans carefully selecting and extracting the stone by hand. Visitors can watch demonstrations of quarrying techniques and learn about the tools and methods used by Native American quarrymen.

  • Circle Trail: The monument offers a scenic walking trail known as the Circle Trail, which loops through the park and passes by several points of interest, including quarries, historical sites, and natural landmarks. Along the trail, visitors can enjoy views of the picturesque Winnewissa Falls and the native prairie landscape surrounding the quarries.
  • The visitor center at Pipestone National Monument provides exhibits, displays, and interpretive programs that offer insights into the history, culture, and geology of the site. Visitors can learn about the significance of pipestone to Native American cultures, the process of pipe carving, and the natural features of the monument.

The DINKs

In addition to visiting MN while staying in Souix Falls, SD, the Dinks made a special trip to Minneapolis to see some baseball and other attractions.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, also known as the Twin Cities, is the cultural and economic hub of Minnesota. Visitors to the Twin Cities can explore world-class museums, theaters, art galleries, and restaurants, as well as iconic landmarks such as the Mall of America, the Minnesota State Capitol, and the historic Stone Arch Bridge.

Shopping & Entertainment: The Mall of America

The Mall of America, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, is one of the largest and most iconic shopping destinations in the United States. Spanning over 5.6 million square feet, the mall features more than 500 stores, ranging from high-end retailers to popular brands and specialty boutiques. In addition to its extensive shopping options, the Mall of America offers a wide range of entertainment and attractions for visitors of all ages. The Nickelodeon Universe theme park boasts thrilling rides, roller coasters, and attractions inspired by popular Nickelodeon characters. The SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium provides an immersive underwater experience, allowing visitors to explore marine habitats and encounter a variety of sea creatures. Other highlights include the LEGO Store, Crayola Experience, and FlyOver America, a virtual flight attraction that takes guests on a breathtaking journey across the United States.

Parking was surprisingly easy and I am sure people could easy spend the entire day there and then some. For us it was just completely overwhelming and we didn’t end up spending much time there.

Sports and Recreation:

Sports enthusiasts will find plenty to cheer about in Minneapolis, which is home to professional sports teams such as the Minnesota Vikings (NFL), Minnesota Twins (MLB), Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA), and Minnesota Wild (NHL). Sports fans can catch a game at the state-of-the-art U.S. Bank Stadium, Target Field, Target Center, or Xcel Energy Center, depending on the season. The Minnesota Twins, based in Minneapolis, have a storied history as one of Major League Baseball’s most beloved teams.

We purposely visited during baseball season so we could see a game. Amidst the excitement of a Twins game, fans can indulge in a beloved tradition: enjoying a delicious bratwurst from Kramarczuk’s, a local institution. Founded by Ukrainian immigrants, Kramarczuk’s has been serving up authentic Eastern European fare since 1954. Their bratwurst, made from a secret family recipe, is a fan favorite at the ballpark and we can see why. Savoring a juicy brat from Kramarczuk’s while cheering on the Twins is a quintessential Minnesota experience, blending the thrill of baseball with the comfort of homegrown flavors.

Outdoor Recreation:

Despite being a major urban center, Minneapolis offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and leisure activities. The Chain of Lakes, comprised of Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles, and Cedar Lake, provides scenic settings for walking, biking, boating, and picnicking. The Mississippi River, which flows through the city, offers opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and scenic river cruises. We looked up a hike near our hotel and got our dogs energy out before we headed to the baseball game. Unfortunately we cant even remember which trail it was.

Local Cuisine:

Minnesota is known for its unique and delicious culinary offerings, including iconic dishes and beloved food establishments. The Family didn’t have enough time to track down some local cuisine but the DINKs were able to.

  • The Juicy Lucy is a legendary burger that originated in Minnesota, specifically in the Twin Cities area. This mouthwatering creation features a hamburger patty stuffed with molten cheese, resulting in a burst of gooey goodness with every bite. The debate over the best Juicy Lucy in town is a staple topic among locals, with various restaurants putting their own spin on this beloved dish. We made sure we tried it at Matt’s Bar, the birthplace of the Jucy Lucy, which has been serving this delectable creation since the 1950s.
  • Caribou Coffee, founded in Edina, Minnesota, is a coffeehouse chain that has become a favorite among coffee aficionados nationwide. Known for its high-quality coffee beans sourced from around the world, Caribou Coffee offers a diverse menu of espresso drinks, specialty beverages, and baked goods. So skip the Starbucks and stick with Caribou Coffee when in MN.
  • Dairy Queen, founded in Joliet, Illinois, but with strong Minnesota roots, is a beloved fast-food chain famous for its soft-serve ice cream and signature Blizzard treats. The first Dairy Queen store opened in 1940 in Moorhead, Minnesota, and the chain has since become a beloved fixture in communities across the state. The nice thing about these is when you are in the middle of nowhere on your road trip, there seem to always be a Dairy Queen when in MN.

Summary

In their exploration of Minnesota, both the DINKs and their counterparts embarked on journeys that intersected at Pipestone National Monument, a testament to the state’s rich cultural and natural heritage. While based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, both groups ventured north to experience the sacred grounds of Pipestone and witness its historical significance firsthand. However, the DINKs extended their travels to immerse themselves in the vibrant urban landscapes of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, where they indulged in the Twin Cities’ renowned arts scene, diverse cuisine, and lively cultural offerings. Each itinerary, whether focusing on ancient traditions or modern city life, captured Minnesota’s essence in its own unique way, offering a glimpse into the state’s deep-rooted traditions and dynamic urban environments. Both journeys underscored Minnesota’s appeal as a destination that seamlessly blends cultural exploration with natural wonders, ensuring unforgettable experiences for all who venture there.
