Local Cuisine
Montreal, known for its vibrant culinary scene influenced by French and Canadian traditions, offers a variety of delicious dishes and unique dining experiences.
- Poutine: Perhaps the most iconic dish of Quebec, poutine consists of french fries topped with cheese curds and smothered in gravy. It’s hearty, indulgent, and available in many variations with added toppings like pulled pork or smoked meat.
- Montreal-Style Bagels: Distinct from New York-style bagels, Montreal bagels are smaller, denser, sweeter, and traditionally baked in wood-fired ovens. They’re often topped with sesame or poppy seeds and served with cream cheese or smoked salmon.
- Smoked Meat Sandwich: Similar to pastrami, Montreal’s smoked meat is made from beef brisket cured in a blend of spices, smoked, and steamed until tender. It’s typically served on rye bread with mustard and pickles.
- Montreal-Style Pizza (Pizza Québécoise): This unique style of pizza features a thin crust with toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, and bacon, all covered under a layer of melted mozzarella cheese.
- Tourtière: A traditional French-Canadian meat pie made with minced pork, beef, or veal (or a combination), seasoned with spices like cloves, cinnamon, and allspice, and encased in a flaky pastry crust.
- Maple Syrup Treats: Given Canada’s abundant maple trees, Montreal offers various maple syrup-infused treats, such as maple taffy (syrup poured onto snow and rolled onto sticks), maple candies, and maple butter.
