Pennsylvania, known as the Keystone State, is a land rich in history and diverse landscapes. From the bustling cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to the serene countryside of Amish Country, Pennsylvania offers a unique blend of urban excitement and rural charm. Its historical significance is profound, as it played a pivotal role in the founding of the United States. The state was the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, both events occurring in Philadelphia. Additionally, Pennsylvania was a central battleground during the Civil War, with the Battle of Gettysburg marking a turning point in American history. Today, Pennsylvania’s varied regions—from the Appalachian Mountains to the rolling hills of the Piedmont—reflect its rich heritage and offer a wide array of experiences for visitors and residents alike.

Here’s a summary of the five regions in paragraph form:

  • Allegheny Plateau: The Allegheny Plateau spans the western part of Pennsylvania and extends into neighboring states, characterized by its rugged terrain, deep valleys, and dense forests. This highland region is known for its natural beauty, with prominent areas like the Allegheny National Forest and the Pennsylvania Wilds offering outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • Ridge and Valley: The Ridge and Valley region is defined by long, parallel ridges and valleys that stretch across central Pennsylvania, forming part of the Appalachian Mountains. This area is celebrated for its scenic landscapes, including the Cumberland Valley and portions of the Appalachian Trail, which attract hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The Same

As large as Pennsylvania is, it’s no wonder there isn’t a lot of overlap between the Family and the Dinks. (Also because the Family often avoids large cities. )

Philadelphia:

Known as the “City of Brotherly Love,” Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and a major cultural and historical center. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The city also boasts vibrant neighborhoods, world-class dining, and a thriving arts scene. Check out our different takes on Philly.

The DINKs

The Family has definitely covered more of PA than we have but there is one city that we have hit that they have not visited.

Pittsburgh:

Nestled in the western part of the state, Pittsburgh is known for its stunning skyline, three rivers, and vibrant cultural scene. Visitors can explore attractions like the Andy Warhol Museum, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, and the historic Strip District. Sports fans can catch a game at PNC Park or Heinz Field.

  • The Strip District: Dive into Pittsburgh’s vibrant food scene at the Strip District, known for its ethnic markets, specialty food shops, and restaurants.
  • Mount Washington: Ride the Duquesne Incline or take a drive up Mount Washington for breathtaking views of the Pittsburgh skyline and three rivers. Our hotel had a shuttle and the drive actually took us up to the top.
  • Point State Park: Relax in this scenic park at the confluence of Pittsburgh’s three rivers, and visit the iconic fountain marking the spot.
  • PNC Park and Heinz Field: Catch a baseball game at PNC Park or a football game at Heinz Field to experience the city’s sports culture firsthand. We visited several times but never for baseball season or clearly we would have seen a game and there happened not to be football either. We did however get a chance to see Pitt College basketball game which was a lot of fun.
  • Primanti Bros.: A Pittsburgh institution known for its iconic sandwiches piled high with coleslaw and french fries, all between two thick slices of Italian bread.

The Family

Living in NY, PA is a great weekend get away for us which we have taken advantage of throughout the kids life.

Hershey-Harrisburg Region:

Known for its chocolate heritage, the Hershey-Harrisburg region offers visitors a sweet escape with attractions like Hersheypark, Hershey’s Chocolate World, and the Hershey Gardens. Nearby Harrisburg, the state capital, boasts historic landmarks, museums, and scenic riverfront parks.

  • Hersheypark: Hersheypark is a family-friendly amusement park known for its mix of thrilling roller coasters, water rides, and attractions suitable for all ages. The park has themed areas, including a water park section called The Boardwalk, and regularly features seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas celebrations. With over 70 rides, including 14 coasters, it’s a must-visit for thrill-seekers.
  • Hershey’s Chocolate World: Adjacent to Hersheypark, Hershey’s Chocolate World is a chocolate-themed attraction where visitors can learn about the history and making of Hershey’s chocolate. The facility offers a free Chocolate Tour ride that takes you through the chocolate-making process, interactive exhibits, and opportunities to create your own candy bar. There’s also a massive retail store where you can purchase all sorts of Hershey products, some of which are exclusive to the location.
  • Hershey Gardens: Hershey Gardens is a 23-acre botanical garden featuring a wide variety of plants and themed gardens. One of its highlights is the Butterfly Atrium, where visitors can walk among hundreds of butterflies from around the world. The gardens also include a Children’s Garden, a Rose Garden, and beautiful views of the town of Hershey and Hersheypark. It’s a peaceful retreat, perfect for those looking to enjoy nature and relax.
The Great Lakes and Erie

The Great Lakes and Erie, PA region of Pennsylvania is a picturesque area known for its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and recreational opportunities. Situated along the shores of Lake Erie, this region offers breathtaking views and outdoor adventures for visitors to enjoy.

Erie, the largest city in this region, boasts a vibrant waterfront area with attractions such as Presque Isle State Park, home to sandy beaches, hiking trails, and picturesque lighthouses. Visitors can explore the Erie Maritime Museum, stroll along the Bayfront Promenade, or take a scenic cruise on Lake Erie.

Presque Isle State Park, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, is a captivating natural gem boasting sandy beaches, picturesque trails, and serene lagoons. Visitors can indulge in a variety of outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, kyaking, biking, and birdwatching while enjoying stunning views of Lake Erie. The park’s unique peninsula setting offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, making it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. We went camping there for the weekend and really enjoyed it. We saw tons of turtles.

Lighthouse Beach, is a favorite spot for visitors seeking relaxation and stunning views. Whether you’re sunbathing on the sandy shores, picnicking with family and friends, or simply taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, Lighthouse Beach provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Plus, the lighthouse itself adds a touch of charm and history to the picturesque scenery, making it a must-visit destination in Erie.

Just a short drive from Presque Isle State Park lies the Gendron State Historic Site, a fascinating glimpse into Pennsylvania’s rich history. This historic site features well-preserved buildings and artifacts dating back to the 19th century, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and explore the region’s cultural heritage. From guided tours to immersive exhibits, Gendron State Historic Site provides an educational and engaging experience for history enthusiasts of all ages.

Punxsutawney

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is famously known for its annual Groundhog Day celebration, where Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog, predicts the weather.

  • Gobbler’s Knob: This is where the famous Groundhog Day ceremony takes place every February 2nd. Thousands gather in the early morning to watch Punxsutawney Phil make his weather prediction. The event is festive, with live music, food, and entertainment.
  • Groundhog Club Headquarters: Learn about the history of Groundhog Day and Phil’s legendary predictions at this small museum dedicated to the event.
  • The Groundhog Zoo: Located in Barclay Square, the Groundhog Zoo is home to Punxsutawney Phil and his family. You can visit them year-round, as they live in a climate-controlled environment with glass viewing windows.
  • Explore Barclay Square: This charming town square is the heart of Punxsutawney, featuring beautiful landscaping, statues, and memorials. It’s also where you’ll find several “Phantastic Phils,” a series of whimsical groundhog statues painted by local artists, scattered throughout town.
  • Take a Walking Tour of the Phantastic Phil Statues: Scattered throughout Punxsutawney, these creatively decorated groundhog statues are a fun way to explore the town. Each statue has a unique design, reflecting different aspects of the local culture and history.
Lancaster County:

Located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster County is known for its picturesque farmland, charming small towns, and Amish communities. Visitors can experience Amish culture, take a buggy ride through the countryside, and explore attractions like the Amish Farm and House and the Strasburg Rail Road.

  • Amish Farm and House: Take a guided tour to learn about Amish culture, lifestyle, and traditions. You can visit an authentic Amish farm, see traditional crafts, and even take a buggy ride.
  • Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market: Experience local Amish goods, from homemade baked goods to handmade crafts and fresh produce.
  • The Lancaster Central Market is one of the oldest continuously operating farmers’ markets in the United States. Here, you can find a variety of local products, including fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, and unique handmade items.

Pocono Mountains:

Visitors can enjoy hiking, skiing, water sports, and other outdoor adventures in this scenic region. We booked a weekend at a indoor waterpark so the kids could enjoy some fun.
