They embarked on a culinary adventure, indulging in lobster rolls at iconic spots like Red’s Eats and savoring the coastal beauty at Cape Elizabeth and Portland lighthouses. On the other hand, The Family opted for a hands-on experience, setting sail on a Maine Lobstering Cruise. Both parties had their highs and lows, but ultimately, they each experienced the best of what Portland had to offer.

- Lobster Rolls: A quintessential Maine dish, lobster rolls feature tender chunks of fresh lobster meat served on a toasted bun with a touch of mayonnaise or butter. We both agree that you can NOT visit Portland without visiting Red’s Eats, a quaint spot an hour outside the city, but undoubtedly worth the drive. The lobster rolls were amazing; It’s like they pack them until no more lobster will fit.
- Clam Chowder: New England clam chowder is a creamy soup made with tender clams, potatoes, onions, and sometimes bacon, all simmered in a rich broth. Enjoy a bowl of this comforting dish at traditional seafood eateries along the waterfront.

Souvenirs
Picking up souvenirs from a trip is something we always try to do in order to remind ourselves of the trip. Imagine bringing home a quaint lobster trap ornament, its weathered wood and nautical charm reminiscent of Maine’s bustling harbors. Alternatively, a jar of locally harvested blueberry jam embodies the state’s wild landscapes and sweet flavors, perfect for morning toast or as a thoughtful gift. For those seeking a more tactile reminder, a handcrafted lighthouse figurine captures the iconic beacons that dot Maine’s rocky shores, guiding ships through misty mornings and stormy seas. These souvenirs not only decorate your home but also spark fond memories of exploring or savoring a lobster roll by the Atlantic. Each item tells a story of Maine’s maritime history and natural beauty, ensuring that your trip lingers vividly in your mind long after you’ve returned inland. The Dinks ended up with several items including the above “Lobster Roll” mug.
The DINKs
For us, Maine was about Lobster, Lighthouses, and brews. We hit up several of each in Portland and all were pet-friendly since we were traveling with our dog.
Lighthouses
Lighthouses included Cape Elizabeth Light Houses, and Portland Lighthouse. Standing as beacons of maritime history and coastal beauty, the lighthouses of Cape Elizabeth and Portland in Maine offer glimpses into the region’s rich maritime heritage. Perched atop rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Elizabeth Light Houses, also known as the Two Lights, have guided sailors and ships along the treacherous coastline for centuries. Just a short distance away, the iconic Portland Head Light reigns majestically over the entrance to Portland Harbor, its historic tower and keeper’s house a symbol of strength and endurance. As the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most photographed in the United States
Lobster Rolls
As for Lobster Rolls, When it comes to indulging in Maine’s quintessential culinary delight, the lobster roll, three establishments stand out for their distinct offerings.
- For those seeking the pinnacle of lobster roll perfection, Red’s Eats is a must-visit destination. Nestled in Wiscasset, this beloved roadside shack has garnered a reputation for serving up generously stuffed lobster rolls bursting with succulent meat, perfectly dressed in creamy mayonnaise and nestled within a buttery, toasted bun.
- Meanwhile, for a dining experience accompanied by breathtaking coastal vistas, The Lobster Shack at Two Lights provides the ideal setting. Perched atop the rocky cliffs of Cape Elizabeth, diners can savor their lobster rolls amidst sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing the culinary experience with a touch of natural splendor.
- And for those in search of both quality and value, Bite into Maine offers an irresistible combination. Located within Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, this food truck delights patrons with its inventive lobster roll variations at affordable prices, ensuring that every bite is a testament to Maine’s culinary excellence without breaking the bank.
Craft Beer & Microbreweries
Portland is renowned for its craft beer scene, with numerous microbreweries and brewpubs offering a wide range of locally brewed beers. Enjoy tasting flights and seasonal brews at establishments scattered throughout the city. Our independent local brewery tour included Allagash, Bissel Brothers, and Shipyard. Each brewery offered its own unique atmosphere and selection of brews, providing a diverse and memorable tasting experience.
- At Allagash Brewery, renowned for its Belgian-style ales, we savored the complex flavors of carefully crafted beers, from the flagship Allagash White to innovative seasonal releases.
- Next, Bissell Brothers Brewing Co. captivated us with its modern, industrial-chic ambiance and bold, hop-forward brews, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of the local beer scene.
- Finally, Shipyard Brewing Company provided a taste of Maine’s brewing heritage with its range of classic and innovative brews, enjoyed amidst the lively atmosphere of its tasting room.
Whale Watching
Despite setting sail during what is typically prime whale watching season in Maine, spanning from mid-April through October, our excursion in August was kind of a bust. While we had hoped for a thrilling encounter with these majestic marine mammals, our experience could be described as somewhat underwhelming. As the boat ventured through the expansive waters off the coast, our excitement mingled with anticipation, only to be met with the sight of a solitary Minke whale and a fleeting glimpse of a harbor porpoise. Though our expectations were not fully met, we found solace in the simple pleasure of being out on the water, surrounded by the serene beauty of Maine’s coastal landscape.
The Family
Maine Lobstering Cruise
Since we had recently been on a whale watching trip in Cape Cod, we decided to mix things up with a Maine Lobstering Cruise. (Sounds like we made a good call. Just saying.) The scenic beauty of the coastline, dotted with weathered fishing villages and iconic lighthouses was beautiful as we set sail on our journey . Soon, the captain slowed the boat to a halt, signaling the start of our hands-on lobstering experience. With baited traps lowered into the depths below, we waited in anticipation, eager to see what the ocean had in store. As the traps were hoisted back aboard, our excitement grew as we glimpsed the fruits of our labor – an impressive haul of lobsters, each one a testament to the rich bounty of Maine’s coastal waters. We loved learning all about lobstering on a Lucky Catch cruise and seeing seals at seal rock.
Maine WildLife Park
But we did have our own little miss with the Maine WildLife Park. While the admission cost was reasonable, the park’s extensive layout meant we had to invest significant effort in walking, only to encounter a handful of attractions. Adding to our disappointment, several sections were inaccessible. Considering this, I would strongly recommend avoiding a visit during the peak of summer.
