Nestled in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is a gem of the Cyclades islands. Famous for its stunning sunsets, white-washed buildings, and vibrant blue domes, this enchanting island is a dream destination for travelers seeking a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and luxurious experiences.
The architecture of Santorini is one of its most striking features. The island is dotted with white-washed houses, blue-domed churches, and narrow, winding streets. These buildings are not only picturesque but also practical, designed to reflect the harsh summer sun and keep interiors cool. The traditional cave houses, known as “yposkafa,” are carved into the cliffs, offering unique and cozy accommodations with breathtaking views.
The Same
We both stopped in Santorini while on a Greek Cruise so our time was limited but we made the most of it by both taking a tour that drove us to Oai and dropped us off in Fira after.
Oia, perched on the northern tip of Santorini, is one of the island’s most picturesque and beloved villages. Known for its stunning sunsets, white-washed buildings, and charming streets, Oia offers a plethora of activities that cater to all tastes. Here’s a guide to some of the best things to do in this enchanting village.
Stroll through Oia’s narrow, winding streets lined with white-washed buildings, blue-domed churches, and charming shops. The architecture is quintessentially Cycladic, with vibrant bougainvillea adding pops of color.
The Classic Viewpoint: The Three Blue Domes
Don’t miss the iconic view of the three blue domes, one of the most photographed spots in Santorini. While we both saw the three blue domes, we did it differently:
- DINKS: We went to the classic photograph spot. There is always a line to get there as early as possible. We lucked out and didn’t wait long. To get there, start at Oia’s main square, then facing the coast head right. Look for Ann’s jewelry store and turn down the small alley before it.
- THE FAMILY: We didnt want to wait in line with the kids so we headed to a cafe that overlooked them. We ordered some coffee and breakfast for the kids and were able to relax a little and enjoy the view.
Fira, the bustling capital of Santorini, is a vibrant town perched on the edge of the island’s caldera. With its mix of cultural attractions, shopping, dining, and breathtaking views, Fira is a hub of activity and a must-visit destination on the island. Both our tours dropped us off here and gave us the rest of the day at our leisure.
Take a Cable Car Ride
For a unique perspective of Fira and the caldera, take a ride on the cable car. We both were dropped off on a bus tour to Fira and had to ride the cable car back down to the cruise port. The ride descends from Fira to the old port, offering spectacular views along the way. It’s a fun and convenient way to reach the port, especially if you plan to take a boat tour from there. Keep in mind that there are many people coming through here from cruise ships so during peak times such as 10-11am or 4-5pm there could be incredibly long waits. We left around 3:30 pm and didn’t have to wait too long.
Walk the Caldera Path
Stroll along the caldera path, which runs from Fira to Firostefani and Imerovigli. This scenic walk offers stunning views of the caldera, the sea, and the white-washed buildings clinging to the cliffs. It’s a relatively easy walk and perfect for capturing beautiful photos of the landscape. We only walked a little of this as it was extremely hot the day we visited but the views were amazing.
Shop in the Boutiques
Fira is a shopping paradise with its narrow streets lined with boutiques, jewelry stores, and souvenir shops. Whether you’re looking for high-end fashion, handmade jewelry, or unique souvenirs, you’ll find plenty of options. Don’t miss the chance to purchase some local products, such as Santorini wines and handmade crafts. It’s the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs. We always try to get a christmas ornament.
Local Cuisine
Santorini, Greece, offers a culinary experience that blends traditional Greek flavors with local ingredients and Mediterranean influences. Here are some must-try foods and dishes in Santorini:
- Santorini White Eggplant: A unique local variety of eggplant with a sweet flavor, often used in dishes like moussaka or stuffed with cheese and herbs.
- Seafood: Santorini is known for its fresh seafood, including grilled octopus, calamari, and local fish such as red mullet and sea bass, often served with lemon and olive oil.
- Santorini Salad: Made with cherry tomatoes, capers, cucumbers, onions, and green peppers, dressed with olive oil and vinegar, reflecting the island’s fresh produce.
- Desserts: Finish your meal with traditional Greek desserts like baklava (layers of filo pastry with nuts and honey), loukoumades (fried dough balls drizzled with honey), or yogurt with honey and walnuts.
The DINKs
While The Family took time to enjoy coffee with a view in Oai, we opted to check out The Church of Panagia and enjoy a few local beers.
The Iconic Santorini Sunset
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Santorini is watching the sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a magical glow over the caldera and the sea. This daily spectacle draws visitors from around the world, all eager to capture the perfect sunset moment. We were actually on the cruiseship when the sun was setting and it turned to give us a 360 experience of the sunset over not only Santorini but the volcano as well. It was absolutely beautiful.
Experience the Church of Panagia
The Church of Panagia, with its striking blue dome and white-washed walls, is one of Oia’s most iconic landmarks. The church is a beautiful example of Cycladic architecture and offers a peaceful place to reflect. It’s also a popular spot for photography.
Santorini Brewing Company
The Santorini Brewing Company was founded in 2011 by a group of friends from diverse backgrounds—a Greek, an American, a Canadian, and a Serbian. Their shared passion for craft beer and desire to bring high-quality brews to Santorini led to the creation of the brewery. Located in the village of Mesa Gonia, this innovative brewery combines traditional brewing techniques with the unique flavors and ingredients of Santorini. We tried the White Donkey and the Lazy Ass. White Donkey is a refreshing wheat beer with a cloudy appearance and a light, effervescent body. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a lighter, slightly tart beer. Lazy Ass is a light, easy-drinking lager that’s perfect for relaxing in the Santorini sun. It’s brewed for maximum refreshment, making it a popular choice.
Summary
In exploring Santorini, Greece, through contrasting perspectives, both travelers savored iconic experiences like the Three Blue Domes, cable car rides, walking the Caldera Path, boutique shopping, and indulging in local cuisine. The DINKs added a touch of romance with breathtaking sunsets, visits to the Church of Panagia, and sampling craft beers at Santorini Brewing Company. Each approach to this stunning island offered unique insights into its beauty and culture. Whether capturing picturesque moments or immersing in local traditions, both journeys celebrated Santorini’s allure in distinct yet equally enriching ways, making it challenging to declare a definitive winner in this captivating Mediterranean paradise.
