Two Different Takes on Switzerland: Lucerne, Zurich, and Saas-Fee Adventures & More

Switzerland, nestled in the heart of Europe, is renowned for its stunning Alpine landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich cultural heritage. Switzerland is famous for its breathtaking Alpine scenery, including iconic peaks such as the Matterhorn, Jungfrau, and Eiger.

Switzerland’s history spans from ancient Celtic tribes and Roman rule to its establishment as an independent confederation in 1291. The Swiss Confederation expanded over centuries, resisting external control and achieving recognized independence in 1648. Internal conflicts in the 19th century led to the 1848 Federal Constitution, forming the modern Swiss state. Renowned for its neutrality, Switzerland avoided involvement in both World Wars and became a global hub for diplomacy and finance.

Today, it is celebrated for its political stability, direct democracy, strong economy, and cultural diversity.

So much so that there was only one place that overlapped between the Family and The Dinks.

LucerneCentral Switzerland Region

Lucerne is a picturesque city nestled amidst stunning mountain scenery and nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Explore the well-preserved Old Town, walk across the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), and take a scenic boat cruise on the lake. The family spent the morning in Lucerne but left before lunch because it was just too busy for them with a festival going on. The Dinks visited in the off seasons and not during a festival and while there still was tourists but it wasn’t overly crowded.

  • Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) and Water Tower: Explore Lucerne’s most iconic landmark, the Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden bridge adorned with beautiful paintings depicting Swiss history and mythology. Admire the medieval Water Tower at one end of the bridge, which once served as a prison and torture chamber.

The DINKs

We were blessed with several days in Switzerland which allowed us to do so much. Even with that time, we definitely want to return and explore more.

  • Getting Around: With as expensive as everything in Zurich is, getting around doesn’t haven’t to be. The Zurich card is best deal for not only getting around but includes a lake cruise and river cruise. We used it for free admission to the Swiss National museum and discounts on the Lindt and FIFA museums.

Explore the Old Town (Altstadt): Wander through the historic streets of Zurich’s Old Town, where medieval buildings, charming squares, and narrow alleyways await. The highlight of the tour is the opportunity to sample a variety of Lindt chocolates, including freshly made truffles, pralines, and signature chocolate bars. Indulge your taste buds as you savor the rich flavors and smooth textures of Swiss chocolate. My husband didn’t believe me when I told him it was all you can eat chocolate. If you don’t leave with a stomach ache then you didn’t do it right. All kidding aside, it was a fun tour we would highly recommend. We used our Zurich pass to get there via train and then left via lake boat.

A cruise on Lake Zurich is a delightful way to experience the beauty of the city and its surroundings from a unique perspective. As you glide across the tranquil waters of Lake Zurich, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the city skyline, the surrounding hillsides, and the distant Alps. Capture postcard-worthy photos of landmarks such as the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and Zurich’s picturesque waterfront.

The best part about the pass is you can get a multi-day one so that you can take your time. Stop off at some of the small towns walk around and have lunch. There is a couple cruise options included in the Zurich pass, we made sure to do the longest available so we could see it all and enjoy some time on the water with some wine. But we also leveraged the shorter ones for some transportation between attractions.

Take a Cruise on the Limmat River: Enjoy a scenic boat cruise on the Limmat River, which flows through the heart of Zurich’s Old Town. Admire the city’s landmarks from a different perspective as you glide along the water, passing under historic bridges and past charming waterfront buildings.

As you cruise along the Limmat River, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Zurich’s historic Old Town, charming bridges, and iconic landmarks such as the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and St. Peter’s Church. Capture memorable photos of the city’s skyline and waterfront architecture from the water.

This too is included in your Zurich pass for free. It started raining a little so we decided to hop on it since it is covered and it was a nice overview while we waited for the rain to stop and we could continue exploring.

Mount TitlisCentral Switzerland (Zentralschweiz) REgion

Mount Titlis is one of the most iconic and popular destinations in Switzerland, offering breathtaking Alpine scenery and a range of activities for visitors to enjoy. Mount Titlis is located in the Uri Alps of central Switzerland, near the town of Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden. It is part of the larger Uri Alps mountain range and stands at an elevation of 3,238 meters (10,623 feet) above sea level. As non-skiers, there was a ton of activities for us to enjoy evening during a white-out snow storm, which seems like might be a frequent occurrence.

  • Panoramic Views: At the summit of Mount Titlis, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Swiss Alps, including iconic peaks such as the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. We missed out on a lot of this but what we could see was beautiful.
  • Cliff Walk: Experience the thrill of walking along the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, which offers panoramic views of the glaciers and deep crevasses below. It was snowing so much we could not see the deep crevasses below but it was an experience in itself.
  • Ice Flyer Chairlift: Take a ride on the Ice Flyer Chairlift, which transports visitors over the glacier, providing close-up views of the icy landscape and surrounding peaks.
  • Glacier Cave: Explore the Glacier Cave, a fascinating ice cave located deep within the glacier. Marvel at intricate ice formations, sculptures, and tunnels created by nature. This was our first time not only standing on a glacier but being able to go in was a “cool” experience. Pun intended.

The Family

As always we avoided big cities like Zurich and stuck to smaller towns.

It is situated in the Saas Valley (Saastal), surrounded by towering peaks, including the Dom, Switzerland’s highest mountain outside of the Monte Rosa massif. This was our home base for exploring Switzerland.

  • Car-Free Environment: One of the unique features of Saas-Fee is that it is entirely car-free. Visitors arriving by car must park in the nearby village of Saas-Grund and continue their journey to Saas-Fee by electric taxi or bus. This contributes to the village’s tranquil and pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

These furry creatures, known for their curious nature and distinctive whistle-like calls, can often be spotted in the meadows and rocky slopes surrounding the village. They are so friendly and the kids absolutely loved feeding them. But always recommend doing so at your own risk and under extreme caution. In addition to marmots, visitors to Saas-Fee may also encounter Highland cows, a hardy breed of cattle known for their distinctive long horns and shaggy coats. These gentle giants are well-suited to the rugged Alpine terrain and can often be seen grazing in pastures near the village.
  • Glacier Gorge: Explore the dramatic landscape of the Fee Glacier Gorge, a natural wonder carved by the glacier’s meltwater over thousands of years. Wooden walkways and bridges allow visitors to navigate through the gorge, offering spectacular views of cascading waterfalls, polished rock formations, and turquoise-colored pools.
