Dallas – Fortworth
Dallas, located in North Texas, is a vibrant metropolis known for its modern skyline, world-class museums, and thriving arts scene. Visitors can explore the historic West End district, visit the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to learn about the JFK assassination, or catch a game at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Fort Worth, often referred to as “Cowtown,” is situated just west of Dallas and offers a taste of Texas’ cowboy culture. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District is a must-visit, where visitors can experience daily cattle drives, explore Western-themed shops, and watch a rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum. The Fort Worth Stockyards and Rodeo offer visitors a thrilling glimpse into Texas’ cowboy culture and Western heritage. Located in the historic Stockyards District of Fort Worth, Texas, this iconic destination celebrates the city’s rich history as a center of the cattle industry and a hub for cowboys, cattle drives, and rodeo events.
- The Fort Worth Stockyards, once the largest livestock market in the world, now serves as a vibrant entertainment district filled with Western-themed attractions, shops, restaurants, and live entertainment. Visitors can stroll along the brick-lined streets, take in the sights and sounds of the Old West, and even witness a real cattle drive as drovers lead a herd of Longhorn cattle down Exchange Avenue.
- One of the highlights of the Fort Worth Stockyards is the daily rodeo events at the Cowtown Coliseum. Visitors can experience the excitement of professional rodeo competitions, including bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, and calf roping, as skilled cowboys and cowgirls showcase their talents in action-packed performances. While this is a chance for many to show their skills as part of their heritage, I personally could not get over how quickly the animals stopped bucking when the belt band was removed. Clearly these animals were in pain and we ended up leaving early. It is not for everyone.
Houston
Houston, the largest city in Texas, is a diverse and dynamic hub known for its world-class dining, cultural institutions, and space exploration history. Visitors can explore the Space Center Houston to learn about NASA’s space missions, stroll through the Museum District to visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science or the Museum of Fine Arts, or enjoy a performance at the renowned Houston Theater District.
Visiting the Houston Space Center is an awe-inspiring experience that offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of space exploration. Located in Houston, Texas, the Space Center is the official visitor center of NASA’s Johnson Space Center and serves as a hub for learning, discovery, and inspiration. Upon arrival, you are greeted by the iconic sight of a massive Saturn V rocket, the most powerful rocket ever flown, which stands proudly outside the Space Center. Inside, there are a variety of exhibits, displays, and interactive experiences that bring the wonders of space to life. One of the highlights of the Space Center is the Tram Tour, which takes visitors behind the scenes to explore NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Along the tour, visitors can see historic Mission Control, where NASA’s famous Apollo missions were monitored, as well as the astronaut training facilities, including the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility and the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. It brought us back to our childhood and the chills of hearing “Houston, we have a problem.”
Austin
Austin, the state capital, is situated in the heart of Texas Hill Country and is known for its lively music scene, eclectic culture, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Visitors can catch live music on historic Sixth Street, take a dip in Barton Springs Pool, or explore the trails and green spaces surrounding Lady Bird Lake.
- The White Horse Saloon is a popular spot in Austin’s East Side neighborhood, known for its laid-back atmosphere, live music, and two-stepping dance floors. Visitors can enjoy cold drinks, live bands playing classic country tunes, and even try their hand at some traditional Texas dancing.
- For a truly unique Austin experience, head over to Little Longhorn Saloon for a game of Chicken Shit Bingo. This quirky event takes place every Sunday afternoon and involves placing bets on where a chicken will relieve itself on a giant bingo board. It’s a hilarious and unforgettable way to spend an afternoon in Austin.
- No visit to Austin would be complete without indulging in some classic Texas comfort food, and Lucy’s Fried Chicken is the perfect place to do just that. This beloved Austin institution serves up mouthwatering fried chicken, crispy chicken fried steak, and other Southern favorites in a casual and welcoming atmosphere. It is oh so good.

In conclusion, while both trips to Texas offered unique and memorable experiences, the DINKs take the win for their more comprehensive exploration of the state. Beyond the well-known destinations of San Antonio and Amarillo, which the family also enjoyed, the DINKs ventured further, diving deep into the vibrant cultures of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin. Their extended time in Texas allowed them to uncover hidden gems and gain a richer understanding of the state’s diverse character, giving them the edge in this friendly comparison.
