The Same

While our trips were extremely different, there was still a lot of overlap.

Conveyer Belt Sushi Restaurant

They have these on almost every street. It’s a bit like sushi on parade – you’re seated comfortably while an assortment of colorful sushi creations whiz by on a merry-go-round of deliciousness. These eateries offer a fun and interactive dining experience, allowing you to pick your favorites as they pass by on a conveyor belt.

Hedge Hog Cafe

Arashio-beya Sumo Stable

Dive into Tokyo’s ancient traditions by visiting a sumo stable, such as Arashio-beya. Witness the rigorous training sessions of sumo wrestlers up close, gaining insight into the discipline and rituals of Japan’s national sport. We had the incredible opportunity to witness a sumo practice session. We recommend getting there early so you can get a spot close to the window to watch.

Tsukiji Market

Explore the bustling Tsukiji Market, renowned as one of the world’s largest fish markets. While the famous inner market has moved to Toyosu, the outer market at Tsukiji still thrives with stalls offering fresh seafood, street food, and culinary delights. Visitors can indulge in the freshest sushi at its many eateries, and explore the myriad stalls offering a wide array of culinary delights and culinary-related products.

Local Cuisine

Tokyo is a paradise for food lovers, offering a wide array of delicious dishes that range from street food to high-end dining.

  • Sushi: Tokyo is renowned for its sushi, including both traditional sushi bars (sushi-ya) and conveyor belt sushi (kaiten-zushi) restaurants. Try fresh nigiri sushi with tuna, salmon, or uni (sea urchin).
  • Ramen: Japan’s beloved noodle soup dish comes in various styles. Try Tokyo-style ramen with a soy sauce-based broth (shoyu ramen), or creamy tonkotsu ramen with pork bone broth.
  • Tempura: Crispy, deep-fried seafood and vegetables coated in a light batter. Tempura restaurants in Tokyo often serve fresh shrimp, fish, and seasonal vegetables.
  • Soba and Udon: Enjoy Japanese buckwheat soba noodles or thick udon noodles served hot or cold with dipping sauces or in flavorful broths.
  • Yakitori: Grilled skewers of chicken (and sometimes other meats) served with tare sauce. Popular yakitori spots in Tokyo offer a variety of cuts and flavors.
  • Street Food: Explore Tokyo’s street food scene with snacks like takoyaki (octopus balls), taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry filled with sweet or savory fillings), and yakisoba (fried noodles).
  • Matcha Desserts: Indulge in green tea-flavored sweets like matcha ice cream, matcha cheesecake, and traditional wagashi (Japanese confections).

The DINKs

I still do not know how we squeezed this all in but I am so glad we did as there isn’t a single thing I would not recommend.

Tokyo Robot Evening Cabaret Show

This dazzling spectacle features high-tech robots, vibrant costumes, and energetic performances that blend music, dance, and technology into a mesmerizing show. You just have to see it. Experience the enthusiasm of local fans, savor ballpark snacks, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of this beloved sport. An American tradition that Japanese are obsessed with. Such a unique sports experience submerged in culture including people drinking Saki out of cartons and wearing traditional Japanese garments in team colors.

Karaoke

End your day like a true Tokyoite by singing your heart out at a karaoke bar. Tokyo boasts countless karaoke venues where you can belt out your favorite tunes in private rooms with friends or join locals in a public karaoke box for a fun-filled evening of music and laughter. No one who knows me would ever believe I sang Karaoke but there are videos to prove it. I’ll spare your ears but we had a blast. You rent a room by the hour as well as drinks. And yes, it was just the two of us belting out our favorite tunes and we loved every minute of it.
