The towns within Central Region offer a diverse range of experiences, from outdoor adventures to cultural attractions and historic landmarks. Whether you’re interested in exploring nature, learning about history, or enjoying local cuisine, there’s something for everyone in this region of New York.

  • Cooperstown: Famous for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown is a picturesque village on the shores of Otsego Lake. It features historic homes, museums, and a vibrant downtown area.
  • Utica: Known for its rich history and cultural diversity, Utica is home to attractions such as the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and the Utica Zoo. It also boasts a thriving food scene with diverse cuisines.
  • Ithaca: Home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, Ithaca is a vibrant college town with a strong arts and culture scene. It’s surrounded by stunning natural attractions, including gorges, waterfalls, and Cayuga Lake.
  • Skaneateles: This charming lakeside village on Skaneateles Lake is known for its scenic beauty, upscale shops, and fine dining. It’s a popular destination for boating, fishing, and outdoor activities.
  • Cortland: Home to SUNY Cortland, this college town offers outdoor recreation opportunities in nearby state parks and forests. It’s also known for its historic downtown area and cultural events.

The Same

The Family visits this region often as they have family in the area so they are definitely more of experts on the area. However, both the Dinks and the Family have spent time in the area so there is plenty of overlap.

Cooperstown

Cooperstown, famously known as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, attracts sports enthusiasts from around the world. Visitors can explore the museum’s extensive collection of baseball memorabilia and learn about the history of America’s favorite pastime. Aside from baseball, Cooperstown is also renowned for its picturesque setting on the shores of Otsego Lake. The village’s charming streets are lined with historic homes, art galleries, and quaint shops. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront or enjoy a boat tour of the lake. In addition to its cultural and outdoor attractions, the Central Region is also known for its thriving food and beverage scene. Visitors can sample locally produced cheeses, wines, and craft beers at the region’s many farm-to-table restaurants and breweries.

Cooperstown, New York, is renowned not only for its baseball heritage but also for its vibrant craft beverage scene. The area boasts several breweries and cideries that offer a wide array of unique and flavorful drinks.

  • Ommegang Brewery: Ommegang is perhaps the most famous brewery in Cooperstown. Founded in 1997, it specializes in Belgian-style ales and has gained national recognition for its high-quality brews. The brewery is known for beers such as Three Philosophers, a quadrupel ale, and Hennepin, a farmhouse saison. They also produce a range of seasonal and limited-edition beers. Ommegang offers brewery tours, tastings, and has a spacious café where visitors can enjoy their brews alongside a menu of Belgian-inspired dishes. The brewery also hosts events and concerts on its scenic grounds.
  • Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard: Located just outside of Cooperstown, Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard is a historic cider mill that has been operating since 1856. It produces a variety of traditional and innovative ciders. The mill offers several types of hard cider, including Original, Apple Raspberry, and Apple Cherry. Visitors can tour the cider mill, enjoy tastings, and purchase a variety of cider products. The mill also has a bakery, snack bar, and a market selling local products.

Howe Caverns:

Embark on an underground adventure through Howe Caverns, where visitors can explore fascinating limestone formations and underground waterways. Discovered in 1842, these caverns offer a captivating journey through winding passages adorned with spectacular limestone formations. Guided tours provide an educational and immersive experience, allowing visitors to marvel at stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological wonders. A highlight of the tour is a serene boat ride along an underground river, offering a unique perspective of the caverns’ beauty. With its rich history, natural splendor, and memorable experiences, Howe Caverns stands as a must-visit destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Another place we haven’t visited since we were little but none the less recommend if you are visiting the area.

Utica

Utica, NY, offers a rich blend of cultural, historical, and outdoor activities that cater to all ages and interests. Whether you’re exploring the arts at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, enjoying local cuisine, or biking along the Erie Canalway Trail, Utica provides a variety of experiences that make it a vibrant and inviting destination.

  • Utica Zoo: The Utica Zoo, located in Roscoe-Conkling Park, is home to over 200 animals representing 99 species from around the world. The zoo offers educational programs, special events, and the opportunity to see animals up close in a family-friendly environment. While we haven’t been here in years, as a child this was a favorite for us.
  • Utica’s Unique Cuisine: Utica is known for its unique culinary offerings, including Utica greens, chicken riggies, and tomato pie.: Sample these local dishes at popular eateries like Chesterfield Restaurant, Joey’s Restaurant, and Tony’s Pizza.

The Family

Ithaca and Cayuga Lake

Exploring Ithaca and Cayuga Lake offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, and outdoor adventures. We visited this region as part of our visit to the Finger Lakes though Ithaca is technically in the central region.

  • Wells Falls is a charming waterfall nestled in the scenic landscape of the town. The falls cascade gracefully over rocky ledges, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and exploration.
  • For a scenic hike through nature’s beauty, the Cascadilla Gorge Trail is a must-visit. This trail meanders along the picturesque Cascadilla Creek, offering stunning views of nine breathtaking waterfalls along the way. Each waterfall boasts its own unique charm, making it a memorable outdoor adventure.
  • Facon Point Winery: Situated on the shores of Cayuga Lake, Facon Point Winery offers stunning vineyard views and exceptional wines. From crisp Rieslings to rich Cabernet Francs, their selection of wines showcases the Finger Lakes’ terroir and craftsmanship.
  • Lively Run Dairy: This family-owned farm and creamery near Cayuga Lake specialize in artisanal goat cheese. Visitors can tour the farm, meet the goats, and sample a variety of delicious cheeses crafted from the farm’s own herd of goats. It’s a unique and flavorful experience that captures the essence of the Finger Lakes region.

Summary

With family nearby, Central New York has become a regular destination for both the Family and the DINKs. Whether it’s exploring the historic charm of Cooperstown, discovering the local food scene in Utica, or enjoying the natural beauty of Ithaca and Cayuga Lake, there’s always something worth visiting.
