Two Different Takes on The Cayman Islands: Secluded Beaches and Ocean Discoveries

The Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, consist of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Renowned for their stunning natural beauty, these islands offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, making them a top destination for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts.

Grand Cayman, the largest island, is famous for Seven Mile Beach, luxury resorts, and a bustling capital, George Town. Cayman Brac, known for its rugged terrain and outdoor adventures, attracts nature lovers and explorers. Little Cayman offers a tranquil escape with its serene environment and diverse wildlife. The Cayman Islands blend luxury, adventure, and relaxation, making them an ideal Caribbean getaway.

The Cayman Islands have a history shaped by seafaring explorers and British colonial influence. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1503, they remained uninhabited until the 17th century when settlers arrived from Jamaica. Known for their strategic location in the Caribbean, the islands became a haven for pirates in the 18th century. In the early 19th century, the British Empire established control over the islands, bringing stability and growth. Today, the Cayman Islands are renowned for their financial services industry, pristine natural environment, and vibrant tourism sector, welcoming visitors from around the world.

The Same

We both visited The Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands trio, renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs that make it a haven for snorkelers and divers alike. This British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea boasts a rich history rooted in its indigenous inhabitants, the Caymanians, and later influenced by British colonial rule. The island’s Seven Mile Beach is a world-famous stretch of white sand, while attractions like Stingray City offer unique encounters with marine life. Whether relaxing on the beach, exploring underwater wonders, or enjoying local culture, Grand Cayman promises a memorable Caribbean experience.

Stingray City

A trip to Stingray City in Grand Cayman promises an unforgettable marine adventure. Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars located in the North Sound, about a 20-minute boat ride from Grand Cayman. Numerous tour operators offer trips to Stingray City. I opted for a morning tour, eager to beat the crowds and experience the serenity of the open sea.

We enjoyed the boat ride out over the crystal-clear waters, while the crew shared fascinating stories about the history of Stingray City, explaining how it became a hotspot for these majestic creatures. Fishermen originally used the area to clean their catch, attracting stingrays with the leftover fish scraps. Over time, the stingrays became accustomed to human interaction, creating a unique opportunity for visitors.

Arriving at Stingray City was like stepping into another world. The shallow waters, no more than three feet deep, shimmered under the sun, revealing dark shapes gliding gracefully just beneath the surface. As I stepped into the warm water, the stingrays, familiar with the routine, began to swim closer.

The first moment of contact was both exhilarating and surreal. These Southern Stingrays, some with wingspans of up to six feet, brushed gently against my legs as they swam by. Their smooth, velvety skin was unlike anything I had ever felt. Guided by the tour crew, I was able to feed them small pieces of squid, a delicacy for these gentle giants.

We visited on a cruise and the comedian the night before made a hilarious joke about taking the squid and rubbing on your friends behind so that the stingray would give your friend a “sting ray hickey.” They can’t see very well and rely on their sense of smell. I was feeding one when a huge female ray came towards me. Scared I pulled my hand away but the ray followed the scent of the squid and wrapped itself around me hugging me until it finished its treat. Frightening but harmless. Holding a stingray is an experience I’ll never forget. The guide also carefully placed one in my arms, and as I held it, I felt a deep connection to the marine world. Despite their size, the stingrays were surprisingly gentle and seemed as curious about us as we were about them.

Local Cuisine

The cuisine of the Cayman Islands reflects a rich blend of Caribbean flavors with international influences. We always try to indulge while in port.

  • Conch: Often served in fritters, ceviche, or stew, conch is a staple of Caymanian cuisine.
  • Turtle: Historically a local delicacy, turtle meat is now served on special occasions due to conservation efforts.
  • Fish: Fresh seafood like snapper, mahi-mahi, and grouper is commonly prepared grilled, fried, or in stews.
  • Cassava: A starchy root vegetable used in various dishes, from bread to side dishes.
  • Breadfruit: Often roasted, fried, or boiled as a side dish.
  • Heavy cakes: A traditional dessert made from cassava, coconut, and sweetened with sugar cane.
