Nestled along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk blends coastal charm with historic significance. Best known for its connection to the Wright brothers and their groundbreaking first powered flight in 1903, the town pays tribute to this legacy at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Beyond its rich history, visitors are drawn to Kitty Hawk’s beautiful beaches, such as the ever-popular Kitty Hawk Beach, along with its inviting local restaurants, unique shops, and welcoming community atmosphere.
The Same
When it comes to a beach getaway, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks offer the perfect blend of laid-back vibes, wide sandy shores, and a touch of history. Both The DINKs and The Family visited these neighboring beach towns, each bringing their own unique perspective to the trip.
The DINKs, with several Outer Banks adventures already under their belt, used their time to revisit favorite spots and explore beyond the beach. Meanwhile, The Family, visiting with kids in tow, focused on soaking up the sun and building sandcastles, making the beach itself the main event. Together, these two takes on the same destination show how the Outer Banks can be both a relaxing retreat and a place to discover something new every time you visit.
Wright Brothers National Memorial:
Neither The DINKs nor The Family ventured into the Wright Brothers National Memorial, but both made sure to stop and visit the memorial outside. This iconic site commemorates Orville and Wilbur Wright’s historic first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903. Atop Big Kill Devil Hill stands a striking granite monument, serving as a tribute to the brothers’ groundbreaking achievement. Visitors can also view replicas of the Wright Flyer and explore exhibits that showcase the Wrights’ remarkable contributions to aviation history, offering a glimpse into the early days of flight and the profound impact the brothers had on the world.
Kitty Hawk Beach
Kitty Hawk Beach is one of my favorite spots in the Outer Banks, known for its wide, sandy shores and welcoming waters. There’s so much space to spread out, making it perfect for sunbathing and just soaking up the warmth of the sun. The gentle waves are perfect for swimming, whether I’m looking for a refreshing dip or just wading in the shallow water. I love spending time beachcombing, searching for seashells, driftwood, and other little treasures washed up along the shore. The peaceful atmosphere also makes it ideal for long strolls along the coastline. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, it’s a great spot for kite flying, paddleboarding, or snapping a few photos of the stunning ocean views. Kitty Hawk Beach truly offers something for everyone, whether I’m visiting with family or enjoying a quiet moment alone by the water.
The Dinks
We didn’t stay in Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills during any of our visits to the Outer Banks, but we made sure to take day trips to these areas each time. While we spent plenty of time relaxing on the beach and visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial, we also explored the local dining scene. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at one of the local spots and even made time to visit a nearby brewery.
Spanky’s Grille: The Dinks visited this popular local spot known for its casual, laid-back atmosphere and classic American fare. The menu features a variety of comfort foods, including burgers, sandwiches, and seafood. The restaurant is praised for its friendly service, generous portions, and a welcoming environment perfect for a relaxed meal after a day of exploring the Outer Banks. This dive was the perfect stop for lunch. The catfish sandwich was huge.
Outerbanks Brewing Station
One of my favorite spots in Kill Devil Hills is the Outer Banks Brewing Station, a unique brewpub that stands out not just for its locally brewed beers, but also for its impressive distinction as the first wind-powered brewery in the United States. The atmosphere here is fantastic, with an extensive outdoor area where I’ve spent many evenings enjoying a cold pint while taking in the fresh coastal air. The kids love the pirate ship playground, which gives them plenty to do while I relax with a drink. As the sun sets, the brewery comes alive with live performances on their stage, adding a fun, lively vibe to the experience. Whether I’m there for the innovative beers, the great food, or simply to unwind with the whole family, it’s always a memorable stop during our visits to the Outer Banks.
The Family
During our beach-hopping adventure across the Outer Banks, we only made a quick stop in Kitty Hawk. We spent some time enjoying the beach, which was beautiful and not too crowded, and our favorites of all the beaches we vistited.
Then we made a brief visit to see the outside of the Wright Brothers Memorial. While we didn’t have time to fully explore the town, it was still nice to experience a bit of its history and coastal charm along the way.
Summary
Whether you’re a couple seeking a peaceful retreat or a family looking to enjoy the beach together, Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills offer something for everyone. From the rich historical significance of the Wright Brothers Memorial to the laid-back vibe of Kitty Hawk Beach, these towns provide a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and history. Both The DINKs and The Family found their own unique ways to enjoy this beautiful stretch of the Outer Banks, whether it was exploring local restaurants and breweries or simply basking in the sun. No matter how you choose to experience it, the Outer Banks never fails to deliver a memorable escape, making it a destination that’s sure to remain a favorite for years to come.
