The Dinks
We have only visited Orange County once, but enjoyed it, especially Balboa Island.
Newport Beach & Balboa Island
Newport Beach and Balboa Island blend coastal beauty, outdoor adventure, and classic California charm. Newport Beach is known for its pristine beaches, luxury shopping at Fashion Island, and world-class dining with ocean views. Visitors can soak up the sun at Corona del Mar State Beach, take a scenic harbor cruise, or enjoy the vibrant atmosphere at Newport Pier. Balboa Island provides a more laid-back, small-town feel, accessible by the historic Balboa Island Ferry. Stroll along the charming waterfront streets, browse unique boutiques, and indulge in a famous Balboa Bar—a chocolate-dipped ice cream treat.
- EAT: Balboa Bar from Sugar & Spice
- STAY: The Hyatt Regency Newport Beach is a bit dated, but we stayed using points. It’s within walking distance to Fashion Island, and the resort fee (waived with points) includes a 9-hole golf course and bike rentals.
The Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve
The Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, commonly known as the “Back Bay,” offers a scenic 10.5-mile loop trail ideal for biking. Staying at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach places you in an excellent position to access this trail directly from the hotel grounds. The trail winds through 1,000 acres of coastal wetlands, offering views of diverse wildlife, including over 200 species of bird. We only did about 3 miles of it and had to turn back as it was starting to get dark.
Walk Around the Island
The main commercial and social hub of Balboa Island is Marine Avenue; a charming, walkable strip lined with boutiques, restaurants, ice‑cream shops, and the legendary frozen banana stands. The scenic walking path loops around the island, offering waterfront views, bobbing sailboats, and a laid-back vibe. As you explore, you’ll pass adorable beach cottages and can pop into small local shops selling everything from coastal gifts to handmade sweets.
Balboa Ferry: For a scenic ride across the bay to Balboa Island. The Balboa Ferry is a charming and historic mode of transportation that has been shuttling passengers, cars, bicycles, and pedestrians between Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula since 1919. Operating daily from 6:30 AM to midnight, this short but scenic ride offers stunning views of Newport Harbor and is a must-do experience when visiting the area. The ferry operates on a cash-only basis, so be sure to have some small bills handy. Whether you’re heading to Balboa Island for a stroll along Marine Avenue or making your way to the Balboa Fun Zone and beaches on the peninsula, the ferry provides a quick, enjoyable, and nostalgic way to travel across the water.
Whale Watching – Experience an unforgettable wildlife adventure with a whale-watching tour from Newport Harbor, where you might spot gray whales, dolphins, and sea lions. During our whale-watching adventure, we were lucky enough to witness a juvenile gray whale playfully interacting with a pod of dolphins. The young whale rolled around in the water, occasionally diving deep, its massive tail rising gracefully above the surface before disappearing beneath the waves. Along the way, we saw countless dolphins darting and leaping through the ocean, adding to the excitement of the trip. We also spotted a group of seals lounging on a buoy, enjoying their daytime rest—since they are nocturnal creatures. As our boat passed by and sent ripples through the water, the seals stirred from their slumber and began playfully jumping through the waves, turning the moment into an unexpected and delightful show.
- Whale Watch through Newport Legacy (Groupon) or if that is no longer check out Newport Beach: Whale and Dolphin-Watching Cruise
Lunch on Balboa Island – Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the island’s cozy cafés.
Balboa Island Museum: The Balboa Island Museum, located at 210 B Marine Avenue, offers visitors a fascinating look into the rich history and culture of Balboa Island and Newport Beach. This free museum showcases exhibits on the island’s development, early settlers, famous Hollywood connections, and maritime heritage. Visitors can explore memorabilia, vintage photographs, and interactive displays that bring the island’s past to life. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for a unique local experience, the Balboa Island Museum is a must-visit destination that provides a deeper appreciation of this charming coastal community.
Sweet Treat – Don’t leave without trying a classic Balboa Bar from Sugar & Spice, a must-have ice cream treat dipped in chocolate and topped with your choice of goodies. We both went with the dark chocolate and peanutbutter cup topping. They also sell the original Frozen Banana which originated on Balboa Island.
Balboa Fun Zone – Ride the historic Ferris wheel, play arcade games, or rent a bike to explore the waterfront.
Newport Beach & Balboa Piers – Take a leisurely walk along the Newport Beach Pier or Balboa Pier, enjoy the ocean breeze, and snap some stunning sunset photos.
