Sports are an integral part of American culture, with iconic venues, legendary teams, and unforgettable games that leave fans with lasting memories. For any sports enthusiast, there are certain experiences across the United States that should be on your bucket list. Obviously buck lists vary depending on what your favorite teams are but there are some places that you just have to check out regardless if you are a fan or not.

I always joke that we see some kind of sporting event on all our trips. Not 100% true but we definitely try. Some of these we haven’t checked off our bucket-list yet but hope to in the future.

As Yankee and baseball fans, we had to see the classic rivalry of Yankees vs Red Soxs.

Staples Center – Los Angeles Lakers

The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, is synonymous with the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers. Walking the fairways where legends have played and witnessing the drama of Amen Corner are unforgettable experiences.

Daytona

Daytona International Speedway, located in Daytona Beach, Florida, is one of the most renowned and historic tracks in NASCAR. Known for its high-speed racing and iconic Daytona 500, which is considered the Super Bowl of stock car racing, Daytona International Speedway is a must-visit for any motorsport enthusiast. The track is famous for its 2.5-mile tri-oval layout, which features high banks and long straightaways, allowing for some of the fastest speeds in NASCAR. The speedway’s grandstands can accommodate over 100,000 fans, creating an electrifying atmosphere during race events.

Personal Favorites

Yankee Stadium:

As a lifelong Yankees fan, there’s a special magic that surrounds Yankee Stadium, a place where history and passion collide in the most thrilling way. Love or hate them, there is almost always a crowd and they always put on a show. The stadium is more than just a venue; it’s a piece of baseball history, filled with legendary moments and an electric atmosphere that has stood the test of time.

One of my personal highlights was witnessing David Cone’s perfect game. It was a night that any baseball enthusiast would dream of. Watching Cone pitch flawlessly and seeing the crowd’s reaction as the innings ticked by was truly magical. It wasn’t just about the game; it was about the shared experience of being in a stadium where every pitch and every moment felt larger than life.

Dean Smith Center – University of North Carolina

As a Tarheel by marriage, I’ve had the unique experience of embracing a fan base that truly bleeds blue. There’s no college event quite like a game at the Dean Dome, where the energy and tradition of the University of North Carolina come alive. While I haven’t had the chance to witness the legendary Carolina vs. Duke showdown myself, my husband has had the thrill of attending this iconic rivalry twice. I can only imagine the electric atmosphere and the intensity of the crowd in such a historic venue. For any college basketball fan, a game at the Dean Dome is a bucket-list experience that embodies the passion and spirit of Tarheel Nation.

Belmont – Triple Crown

Watching American Pharoah win the Triple Crown at Belmont Stakes was an unforgettable experience. Belmont Park, with its historic charm and electric atmosphere, provided the perfect backdrop for such a historic moment in horse racing. Seeing a horse complete the Triple Crown, a feat achieved only by a select few, was thrilling and deeply moving. The roar of the crowd as American Pharoah crossed the finish line, solidifying his place in racing history, made the event even more special.

Levi’s Stadium – San Francisco 49ers

Levi’s Stadium, located in Santa Clara, California, is the home of the San Francisco 49ers. This state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2014, has quickly become an iconic venue in the NFL. It has hosted Super Bowl 50, numerous college football games, and concerts. The stadium is known for its modern design, sustainable features, and fan-friendly amenities.

We both grew up 49ers fans so this was a must for us when visiting San Francisco.

Bristol

Bristol Motor Speedway, often simply known as Bristol, is one of NASCAR’s most iconic tracks. Located in Bristol, Tennessee, this half-mile short track is renowned for its intense racing and close-quarters competition. The Speedway’s design creates a unique and exhilarating racing experience, where the action is constant and the excitement is palpable. Its compact size and high-banked turns mean that drivers are often racing just inches apart, making for thrilling, edge-of-your-seat moments. Bristol is also famous for its vibrant atmosphere, drawing fans from all over who come to experience the raucous energy and camaraderie of race weekends.

Lowe’s Motor Speedway – Charlotte:

Located in Concord, North Carolina, just outside of Charlotte, Lowe’s Motor Speedway is a major hub for NASCAR racing. Opened in 1960, it is known for hosting the annual Coca-Cola 600, one of NASCAR’s premier events. The speedway’s 1.5-mile quad-oval track and rich history in auto racing make it a must-visit for motorsports enthusiasts. In addition to the Coca-Cola 600, the speedway also hosts the NASCAR All-Star Race and numerous other events throughout the year, providing fans with an exhilarating experience.

Saratoga Race Track

Saratoga Race Track, located in Saratoga Springs, New York, is one of the oldest and most prestigious horse racing tracks in the United States. Opened in 1863, it has a rich history and is known for hosting the annual Saratoga Summer Meet. The track’s historic ambiance and thrilling races attract horse racing enthusiasts from all over the world, making it a bucket-list destination. Growing up only a few mins from the track, this place holds a special place in my heart.

Pinehurst No. 2 (NC) – US Open

Living in North Carolina my husband has been lucky enough to see the Open at Pinehurst a couple of times. Known for its historic courses and storied past, Pinehurst No. 2 is especially renowned for hosting the US Open. Witnessing the tournament at this iconic venue was nothing short of exhilarating. The course, designed by Donald Ross, is famous for its turtleback greens and challenging layout, which has tested the skills of many top golfers. Being there, surrounded by the excitement of the tournament and the beauty of the course, made it an unforgettable experience. If you’re a golf enthusiast, attending the US Open at Pinehurst is a bucket-list event that truly captures the essence of the sport.
